Board reconsiders school closings

A majority of Charleston County School Board members would support closing and restructuring some district schools, but they seemed to lean toward making less painful changes than the most severe proposed by district staff, according to an informal survey of the nine-member board by the Post and Courier.

Malls slow; King St. hot

On what was expected to be the biggest shopping day of the holiday season, local malls were relatively quiet Saturday, lacking an upbeat Christmas feel. Shoppers, meanwhile, crowded onto King Street in downtown Charleston looking for that special gift and soaking in the festive â€" and warm â€" holiday atmosphere.

Single mother is raising her son without child support

Local man faces prison in scheme

Depending on who you ask, Tu Quy Mai is either a cunning con artist who bilked the insurance industry out of more than $4 million or a hapless refugee who proved to be a convenient fall guy for the scam. The 58-year-old North Charleston man has pleaded guilty to 54 counts of mail fraud in connection with an elaborate scheme in Massachusetts that involved staged car accidents, fraudulent physical therapy clinics and a host of bogus billings.

Charleston police arrest 2 suspects

A Charleston shoe repair store was robbed Friday afternoon by two young men armed with a BB pistol, and police promptly arrested two suspects. The robbery happened at Fralix Shoe Repair, 9 Cannon St., shortly before 2 p.m. The store owner and a friend were there at the time, according to city police.
