Bomb kills Citadel graduate

An Army officer became the 14th graduate of The Citadel to be lost in the Mideast wars when a roadside bomb exploded near his armored Humvee in Afghanistan a week ago. Maj. Brian M. Mescall, 33, was one of three soldiers killed in Jaldak, in the Zabul Province in southern part of the country. They were assigned to 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, in Hohenfels, Germany.

Charity founder gets prison term

Charity founder Albert Salmon Jr. was sentenced Thursday to a year in prison in his state tax fraud case, ending years of investigation into his defunct shelter for the homeless. Prosecutors hope the jail time â€" and an order to pay back some of the cost it took to prosecute him â€" sends a message to tax cheats that fraud can lead to time behind bars.

U.S. will 'never falter, never fail'

WASHINGTON â€" Unpopular but unbowed, President George W. Bush defended his tumultuous two terms in a farewell address to the nation Thursday night, claiming a hard-won record of achievement. Reaching back to the Sept. 11 attacks, when the public rallied behind him, Bush declared the United States will "never tire, never falter and never fail."

Escape artist gets 22 years

SUMMERVILLE â€" A Houdini-esque burglar who twice escaped from authorities â€" once by jumping from a moving patrol car â€" will spend the next 22 years in state prison, if he can stay corralled. Adam Lee Longa, 31, of Goose Creek, was sentenced this week to prison time for escape and for four counts of burglary.
