Tonight On The CBS Evening News

Here’s an early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

In a special broadcast from Washington, D.C., tonight, I'll show you my exclusive interview with President-elect Barack Obama. Earlier today, I asked him about the questions surrounding his pick for Treasury chief, Timothy Geithner, and how he'll work with Congress as president. Also: What did Mr. Obama say would be his No. 1 priority as president? And what's his reaction to the new purported Osama bin Laden tape? You won't want to miss the answers.

On that new tape, al-Qaeda’s chief urges Muslims to launch a jihad against Israel. He focuses on harnessing anger over the Gaza offensive, and ties the decline of America's dominance on the world stage to Israel's attacks. David Martin has the latest.

In the icy Midwest, Dave Price will have the latest in low temperatures, wind and snow … and all of the havoc this mid-winter freeze is wreaking for residents.

Also, unraveling the mystery behind a pilot who's accused of faking his own death. He was captured, very much alive, at a campsite in Florida, after jumping from his plane before it crashed in Alabama. Chief Investigative Correspondent Armen Keteyian explains that pilot Marcus Schrenker had many reasons to try to disappear.

Finally tonight, nearly 1,400 bands and groups applied to be part of next week's inaugural parade. Only a few dozen made the cut. Continuing our series, Road to the Inauguration, Steve Hartman meets one little drum band that beat the odds.

See you tonight,

Katie
