This is from a release put out by our friends at the Immigration Policy Center: "On Wednesday January 14, the House passed the State's Children Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) reauthorization bill, H.R. 2, with the inclusion of the Immigrant Children's Health Improvement Act (ICHIA) - a provision that would expand coverage to children of legal immigrants as well as pregnant immigrants. "Two hundred and eighty nine House members made the important choice to vote today for the health and well-being of children. Today's decision is important because the House recognized that immigrant children deserve health insurance, recognizing that these children are part of America's future and should not be treated differently solely because their parents are immigrants. Quite frankly, we all benefit from healthy children. "The Senate now has the opportunity to join the House in supporting access to healthcare for children, immigrant and native-born alike. The first test comes tomorrow when the Senate Finance committee takes up its version of SCHIP and will vote on whether or not to include access for legal immigrant children." The House did the right thing. Now would be a nice time to call your senator. -Joshua Holland Editor, Immigration coverage |
