N.C. educator to be next schools chief

MONCKS CORNER â€" For the first time in its history, the Berkeley County School District has gone outside of the Palmetto State to pick a new superintendent. The school board unanimously voted Sunday to offer Anthony Parker, a longtime North Carolina educator, a three-year contract worth $195,000 a year. Parker, 58, the superintendent of the Johnston County School District, has accepted the offer to replace retiring Superintendent Chester Floyd.

Five players busted by Mount Pleasant police more than two years ago have secured a court order allowing them, in essence, to argue the game hinges on talented human play â€" not the luck of the cards.

Man says he and his family are targeted for being black in white neighborhood

Clifford Washington asked his wife to stop taking walks down their country road after the day someone shouted the N-word at her. Soon after that incident two years ago, Washington started seeing bullet or pellet holes on his garage, the trucks parked in his yard and above his front door. He thinks he and his family are paying the price for being a black family in a white neighborhood.

As Mike Maloy sat in a Vanderhorst Street coffee house in downtown Charleston recently, he was keenly aware that all around him was where one of the most significant but currently least-appreciated chapters in the city's history unfolded.

Boater aids in rescue

The U.S. Coast Guard and a good Samaritan helped rescue a local man who was adrift on his capsized boat Sunday off Morris Island.
