CBS Evening News with Katie Couric E-Mail Alert

Hi everyone,

We'll begin tonight's broadcast with new revelations surfacing about the alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme run by former financier Bernard Madoff. The list of alleged victims keeps growing, and now includes several Hollywood bigs. Meanwhile, in Washington, the SEC chairman Christopher Cox ordered an internal investigation into whether his agency missed signs of trouble with Madoff’s investments. And although Madoff avoided jail for now, remaining free on bail, he had to run the gauntlet of press when returning home to New York. Bob Orr has the full story.

Despite legal and legislative challenges to his office, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is still standing – and fighting. Today, our Cynthia Bowers asked President-elect Barack Obama about releasing records of any communications with Blagojevich – and we'll show you what he said tonight.

Next: OPEC announced its biggest production cut in history today. The cartel plans to subtract 2.2 million barrels a day from its output. OPEC hopes to drive the price of a barrel to roughly double what it is today. Oil producers in Russia and elsewhere said they would follow suit – but what will it mean for U.S. drivers? Elizabeth Palmer has the story.

Later this week Bush administration plans to auction off more than 100,000 acres of public land in Utah to allow oil-and-gas drilling. Conservation groups are suing the government, trying to block the sale of what they call a cultural treasure. Wyatt Andrews has the story and will show us an interview with Robert Redford, who calls the sale "morally criminal."

Finally, what do you get when you plunk 28,000 pipes down next to the women's department of a giant retail store? A huge holiday tradition that's music to Macy's ears. We sent Richard Schlesinger to Philadelphia to scope out the world's largest pipe organ.

See you tonight!
