From garbage to green

An old city garage has gone from grease pit to green patch. Grown-ups stood on stage to dedicate Charleston's newest park on Saturday morning. But the children who came with them didn't pay any mind; they were too busy putting a swing set, a playground and an oversized chess board to use.

Record rainfall leaves flooded roads, homes

Some West Ashley residents were driven from their homes Saturday by flood damage from record-setting rain that flooded streets and stalled cars around the area the night before. Impassable roads and stranded motorists were reported as up to 8 inches of rain fell in the tri-county area until just past midnight Friday.

Hospitals starting to adopt palliative care

As her husband's health problems compounded â€" a kidney transplant, heart issues and a broken hip â€" Susan Kelley told the increasing cadre of doctors, "We are going to handle it." When his primary doctor mentioned "palliative care," she flat-out refused. Susan Kelley equated the phrase with hospice. "You only have two weeks to live, and hospice comes in," she said. "(But) it wasn't like that at all."

Berkeley may put brakes on policy

MONCKS CORNER â€" One Lowcountry county allows a lot more of its employees to drive government-owned cars home after they're finished a day's work. It's a benefit to several employees of Berkeley County, which allows nearly 95 take-home cars to non-law enforcement employees â€" more than Dorchester and Charleston counties and the city of Charleston combined.
