CBS Evening News with Katie Couric E-Mail Alert

Hi everyone,

Six days and counting until Election Day, and the campaigns are moving at a furious pace. Both candidates are in Florida today – with Senator John McCain imploring his supporters not to be discouraged by new poll numbers that show him trailing in the Sunshine State … and other key swing states. "Don't give up home. Be strong," he said. Chip Reid is on the trail with McCain and has the latest.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama's campaign prepares to reach into millions of living rooms tonight. Three networks and four cable channels are running a paid, half-hour infomercial about himself and his campaign. Obama is already dominating ad airtime in the big markets – so is this overkill, or a good use of his campaign funds? Dean Reynolds has the story and Jeff Greenfield joins us for some analysis.

This afternoon the Fed cut its benchmark interest rate by half of a percentage point – the second rate drop this month. Will it do anything to revive the economy? Anthony Mason reports.

Also tonight, you won't want to miss the final installment of our special series, "Presidential Questions." Among the questions I pose to Barack Obama and John McCain: "What is your favorite book?" and "What would you want on your tombstone?" If you want to check out the questions they've already answered, they're right here on our Web site.

Next week in California, voters will be asked to decide a number of state issues in addition to the presidential election. None is more controversial than Proposition 8, which calls for an amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriages. John Blackstone reports.

Finally: I'll take you on a journey from the independent movie screen to Broadway. It's the journey rock legend Elton John took with his new musical – and he'll explain why “Billy Elliot” is so close to his heart.

See you tonight,
