Samford sends Citadel to 4th straight defeat

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. â€" It's a long trudge off the field at Samford University's Seibert Stadium, up two sets of stairs and around the corner to the visitors' locker room. The Citadel Bulldogs made that walk in dead silence late Saturday afternoon. There was not much to say about a disheartening 28-10 loss at Southern Conference newcomer Samford, and about a once-promising season that has turned increasingly grim.

Horns hang on, top Cowboys

AUSTIN, Texas â€" Colt McCoy made rare mistakes. The Texas defense got pushed around and the Longhorns watched their big lead and momentum gradually disappear. Suddenly, the No. 1 team in the country looked vulnerable. Yet here they are, still unbeaten, and with still more tough games to play.

Aiken makes an indirect path to NFL

Ron Aiken started his coaching career nearly 30 years ago as an offensive line coach at Boiling Springs High School. Over the past three decades Aiken has just about seen it all. He has coached at just about every level of competitive football from high school, to small college, to the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten. Along the way, the 52-year-old Moncks Corner native has moved more than a dozen times, making stops in Troy, N.Y.; Tarkio, Mo., and San Diego.

CSU shuts out UNCA in soccer

Charleston Southern (9-4-4, 4-1-3) notched a 3-0 home victory over UNC Asheville (5-10-1, 3-5-0) in a Big South Conference women's soccer match on Saturday. Emma Mattsson (23rd minute), Michelle Dennis (58th) and Caitlin Wenesky (68th) scored the goals. The Bucs' Alyssa Budros made six saves for the shutout.

Bucs no match for Flames

LYNCHBURG, Va. â€" Liberty rolled up 321 yards of offense in the first half en route to a 42-0 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday. The Flames finished with 492 total yards compared to the Buccaneers' 191. Liberty quarterback Brock Smith completed 17-of-27 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns while throwing one interception, which came on a long pass with time winding down in the first half.
