The Most Dangerous Word

Posted: 12 Jan 2009 05:22 AM CST

"Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting." - Dr. Seuss

Tomorrow. Tomorrow is the most dangerous word. When we make the choice to put something off until tomorrow, we are missing the opportunity to live fully in the present; to live in the here and now; to live this day.

None of us have a guaranteed ticket punched for tomorrow. What we are guaranteed, however, is this day. We shouldn't miss the chance to live each day to its fullest and without regret.

We should strive every day to tell our spouses and partners we love them. We should hug our children and tell them we love them, too. At work, we can look for opportunities to thank our co-workers, supervisors and our customers. In our quiet moments, we should celebrate and rejoice all of our personal victories – no matter how large or small.

The word tomorrow is dangerous because it implies today is not the right day to do what's on our minds. Tomorrow suggests we can wait and risk not sharing our gifts with others. Using the word tomorrow can often silence our hearts' desires by one more day.

What will you do today?:

  • Today you can be a person of choice and begin to live life on your terms.
  • Today you can find peace and give yourself whatever makes you feel free.
  • Today you can choose to tell the people in your life how much you love them.
  • Today you can choose to live as if it were your last day on this earth.
  • Today you can choose to confront your fears and take that first small step out of your comfort zone and into the area of growth and success that awaits you.
  • Today you can choose to live with a joyful and peaceful heart because you know, deep-down, you are worthy of asking for what you want, and receiving it.
  • Today is yours to conquer and begin to silence the fears echoing in your mind that has been reverberating with self-doubt for far too long and has kept you from being who you are meant to be.

While it's true that just one day will not give you enough time to do everything you want to do, or to get everything you want to get, committing to living each day to the fullest will certainly begin the process.

Your value is not measured by what you have done in the past, or by what has happened to you, or by where you have come from; your true value is measured by where you are going, by what is waiting for you, and by committing to moving forward.

Today is the day you can begin to move forward. You don't have to wait any longer and you don't have to wait for tomorrow. Waiting is dangerous because tomorrow may never arrive.

Begin today, right now.
