Wet and Mild

Week 9 of Friday Night Lights turned into a rainy daze. Numerous games in the Lowcountry were postponed Friday, and a good number of the contests were postponed during or after the afternoon rush hour. The late decisions to reschedule the games caused frustration, confusion and, in some cases, anger.

Moyer makes his first Series pitch

PHILADELPHIA â€" The 100th anniversary of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" was Friday. No truth to the tale that Jamie Moyer was the first to sing it. In a World Series full of juicy subplots, perhaps the most intriguing of all is about to play out: Can a 45-year-old man with a heater that rarely cracks 85 mph stop a lineup stacked with brash boppers? Game 3 is tonight, weather permitting, when the ol' left-hander and the Phillies face the Tampa Bay Rays with the teams tied at a game apiece.

Bulldogs face 'huge' challenge at Samford

Citadel football players were rightly impressed last week with Furman's outsized tackle, 6-7, 320-pound Joel Bell. Today, the Bulldogs face an offensive line stacked with Joel Bells. Led by senior left tackle Mitchell Waters (6-6, 308), Samford's starting line goes 6-7, 312; 6-4, 306; 6-6, 330; and 6-4, 318.

Bucs try to derail Liberty's chances

Something quite unusual happened in Lynchburg, Va., last week. Liberty lost a football game. The 35-21 loss to Lafayette snapped an 11-game win streak for coach Danny Rocco's team, ending the longest streak in school history and putting put a dent in Liberty's bid to make the FCS playoffs.

No hype needed for Hampton showdown

South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough is certain that he won't need any big pre-game speech this afternoon. Just one word should suffice â€" Hampton. S.C. State takes on a Hampton in a showdown for first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg.
