Housing woes spilling over

The fallout from the local housing downturn and the global financial crisis is spilling over into areas of the once-thriving commercial real estate market in Charleston, industry experts said Thursday. As a result, vacancies have increased at area office buildings, shopping centers, apartments and warehouses.

Greenspan 'shocked'

WASHINGTON â€" Badgered by lawmakers Thursday, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan denied that the nation's economic crisis was his fault, but conceded that the meltdown had revealed a flaw in a lifetime of economic thinking and left him in a "state of shocked disbelief."

Wellman workers' jobs spared

Workers at Johnsonville's Wellman Inc. plant won't be losing their jobs after all. An investor group led by J.H. Whitney & Co. completed the purchase Wednesday of the Florence County engineering resins factory, not only saving the jobs of 163 employees but creating another 100 new jobs, the state Commerce Department said Thursday. The new plant will be called Wellman Plastics Recycling and will also operate under Wellman Engineering Resins.
