CBS Evening News with Katie Couric E-Mail Alert

Hi everyone,

As the presidential election draws near, has John McCain been able to cut into Barack Obama’s lead? We'll have the results of a new CBS News/New York Times poll. Meanwhile, our correspondents are on the campaign trail with the latest. Chip Reid is with John McCain – and Dean Reynolds is with the Obama campaign in one usually reliable red state … that is suddenly very much in play.

The stock market continues to demonstrate its volatility – rising and falling sharply throughout the trading day. Anthony Mason explains what's happening on Wall Street, and reports on Alan Greenspan’s testimony on Capitol Hill. Many experts now say the former Fed Chairman deserves at least partial blame for the current financial crisis.

The credit crunch has driven interest rates on loans sky high. And that’s led to a new kind of sticker shock at the car lot.  Mark Strassmann reports.

Also tonight, it’s one of the most important challenges the next president will face: Combating Islamic extremism. What do Barack Obama and John McCain propose? David Martin explains "Where They Stand."

And next: You've all heard the risks of driving while talking on a cell phone. But now there's a solution. It could save you money – and even save your life. Daniel Sieberg shows us how.

Finally tonight: It's a mode of transportation that virtually disappeared after a horrifying disaster in the 1930s. But now, a renaissance in airship travel is coming to San Francisco. John Blackstone lifts off in a new Zeppelin – and takes us along for the ride. After all, why fly … when you can float!

See you tonight,
