School debate spirited

Candidates for the Charleston County School Board sparred Tuesday night on a number of issues, including money, the superintendent and the school district's progress, during a fast-paced, hour-long debate hosted by the League of Women Voters. Candidates were assigned to one of two groups, and discussion was a little livelier and differences among candidates more apparent in the first round in which three of the four West Ashley candidates faced off.

Families moved in together to save money, and the lucky kids scraped together 5 cents to get an occasional treat from Stender's Bakery.

Man pleads guilty in slaying of woman

The family of Johns Island murder victim Elaine Humbert described her as a kindly 62-year-old woman who was always willing to help out a stranger.

House approves deep cuts

COLUMBIA â€" A plan to cut nearly $500 million in spending is on its way to the state Senate after the House on Tuesday voted down one proposal after another on everything from raising the cigarette tax to undoing property tax relief.
