Your free guide to all things "election"

AlterNet: The Mix is the Message

Dear Reader,

I'm sure you agree this has been a heck of an election season unlike anything in memory, with many highs and lows. Sarah Palin, of course, has gotten incredible attention, as has the mudslinging mostly coming from the McCain campaign. Much of the coverage has been about personalities and attempts to slander -- and certainly not enough about the issues.

We face daunting problems caused by the massive deregulation of the financial markets, excessive corporate behavior, bad loans leading to a plunge in housing values, and on and on. All this will affect your day-to-day life -- your health care, what you can afford to spend for essentials -- and the future in so many ways. So we have to get it right on November 4.

Many things hinge on Election Day. And for the best preparation before you vote, AlterNet has put together some handy election guides.

AlterNet's voter guides will show you where the candidates stand on the issues that matter the most, like the economy, the environment, health care, immigration and reproductive justice.

Make Your Vote Count

And with all the hullabaloo in the media about voter fraud, potential long lines and those dratted voting machines, it pays to take basic steps to ensure your vote and those of your friends and family are protected. Here are the essential steps. They may seem obvious and simple, but still, they are necessary.

Use these tips to make sure your voice is heard on Election Day:

  • Call your county election office to ensure your registration information is correct.
  • Vote early to avoid Election Day delays or use an absentee ballot.
  • For those voting on Election Day, know where your polling place is located, what ID to bring (especially new voters) and expect lines.
  • Call an election protection hotline if there is trouble.

Happy voting and see you at the polls!
