Motel room meth lab

He was quiet and clean-cut. He had been staying at the Budget Inn on Fain Road in North Charleston for about six months. He was a construction worker, and his boss picked him up for work every day. That's how motel management described the man in room 132, where an active methamphetamine lab was discovered Wednesday shortly before 10 a.m.

Students become scientists on cruise

The streambed looks like a meandering Lowcountry tidal creek, its sandswept rocks swarmed by fish. Except that it's 25 miles out to sea from Charleston, on the ocean floor. The ancient channel is a remnant of the Ice Age shoreline of South Carolina. Nobody knew it was there until a group of College of Charleston students beamed sonar across it two years ago.

No one injured in blaze

AWENDAW â€" Leon Sanders was getting ready for work on Wednesday morning when his daughter told him their neighbor's house was on fire. After placing a call to 911, the Charleston Water System supervisor went next door and knocked. Behind the front door, the mobile home on Garden Hill Road was engulfed in flames.

Canterbury will retire at end of year

Charleston County Administrator Mack Canterbury is retiring at the end of the year. It's a good time for him to move on, Canterbury said, because the county is about to launch several long-term efforts for which a new administrator should "get in on the ground floor." Those efforts include planning for how the county will handle solid waste in the future and developing a system that consolidates all the emergency dispatch services in Charleston County.

Meth lab activity
