Davis hoping to squeeze success out of bleak second-half forecast

CLEMSON â€" Asked if he's accepted the notion that running the ball is going to be a tall order for Clemson this season, James Davis produced an expression that suggested he didn't know whether to break out in laughter or tears. "Yes," he said. "As you can see." When the running game choked and sputtered earlier this season, Davis professed confidence that things would eventually turn around as the Tigers' offensive line developed.

Hamels, Utley spark Philadelphia in Game 1 victory

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. â€" Cole Hamels, Chase Utley and the rest of the Philadelphia Phillies shook off a week's worth of waiting and turned it into a World Series win. Hamels escaped trouble to win his fourth postseason start, Utley hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-2, in the opener Wednesday night. The worst-to-first Rays flopped in their first game in baseball's ultimate event, managing just five hits.

USC rings, chin straps and Dabo

Sporting notes compiled while wondering if my chin strap is tight enough:

Heisman hype means very little in October

COLUMBIA â€" Have we learned nothing, football pundits of America? For one, I'm sick of hearing Heisman talk in October. It just doesn't matter. It doesn't. I appreciate the history of the Heisman trophy. I do. But it's just one award, and the players that win it don't necessarily go on to do great things in the NFL. Some do, most don't.

SoCon suits Samford just fine

Pop quiz: Which Southern Conference football team has enjoyed the largest increase in attendance this season? OK, aside from three-time defending national champion Appalachian State, which some people think is in the wrong league, anyway. It's not Elon, which has rocketed from the league basement into the FCS Top 10 in record time under coach Pete Lembo. It's not The Citadel, which opened state-of-the-art club seating and skyboxes to much fanfare at Johnson Hagood Stadium. And it's not Wofford, which continues to pile up rushing yards and wins at an alarming rate.
