March 1996 A convoy carrying food supplies crawls slowly across Angola's border. Peace in this country progresses at much the same pace. Every week a Joint Commission of UNITA and MPLA leaders meet in the capital, Luanda, to wrangle the peace accord forward. The main item on the agenda is UNITA's delay in demobilising its army. Soldiers straggling in from the bush to hand over their guns is a familiar sight in Angola. In the most destructive phase of the twenty year old war, government-held towns like Kuito suffered savage bombardment. Kuito's citizens scrabble a living in the ruins of their homes. Once the children died from shellfire, they now die from malnutrition. Listless babies sit on the dusty ground, oblivious of the flies which buzz around their faces. Their fathers' fields are sown not with seeds but with landmines. While welfare is at its lowest in Angola, the elite in Luanda have grown rich off economic spoils. UNITA lays claim to the diamonds while the MPLA drills for oil. The citizens of Kuito gather in a wrecked church to sing for peace.. Will their leaders ever hear the people's hymns for peace?

Part 2 in the series. From 1961 to 1974 under Portuguese colonial rule and then from independence in 1975 to 2002, Angola experienced great internal turmoil as UNITA, the MPLA, the Portuguese military, the FNLA, the South Africa military, the Cubans, the Soviets and East Germans all participated in first, a war of independence, then a war for Cold War ideological dominance in the country. By 2002 the country was in complete ruins, it ranked near the bottom of the United Nations Human Development index. There was no economy to speak of. Although the country was rich in diamonds and oil, these resources had been used to finance the war. Millions of people had been internally displaced. There was next to no foreign investment. In stepped China. China's need for oil has turned Angola into the second largest oil exporter in Africa, and the country is poised to replace Nigeria as the number one exporter of oil in Africa within a few years. Not only is China buying Angolan oil, it is building or rebuilding all kinds of infrastructure in the country. The construction boom in Angola has drawn South African, Portuguese and Brazilian companies to the country as well to service the growing Angolan market. Angola is rebuilding its country after the end of a 27-year civil war in 2002. Fighting between the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), led by Jose Eduardo DOS SANTOS, and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), led by Jonas SAVIMBI, followed independence from Portugal in 1975. Peace seemed imminent in 1992 when Angola held national elections, but UNITA renewed fighting after being beaten by the MPLA at the polls. Up to 1.5 million lives may have been lost - and 4 million people displaced - in the quarter century of fighting. SAVIMBI's death in 2002 ended UNITA's insurgency and strengthened the MPLA's hold on power. While President DOS SANTOS had pledged to hold legislative elections in 2007, he has since announced that legislative elections will be held in 2008, with Presidential elections planned for 2009. A specific election timetable has yet to be established. Jonas Malheiro Savimbi (3 de Agosto de 1934 — 22 de Fevereiro de 2002) foi um político angolano, durante mais de 30 anos o líder da UNITA. Jonas Savimbi nasceu e cresceu na província do Bié.
