Tonight On The CBS Evening News

Here’s an early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Early Show Anchor Maggie Rodriguez, in for Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric

Good afternoon, everyone. This is Maggie Rodriguez filling in for Katie.

Israel vows a "war to the bitter end," as it continues to bomb symbols of Hamas power in Gaza. In three days, more than 300 have been killed, and more than 1,400 wounded. Still, Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel, and many experts believe an Israeli ground invasion may be next. Mark Phillips reports from the frontlines.

So, what’s behind this latest Middle East clash? Sheila MacVicar reports on the history of bad blood between Israel and Hamas over the small strip of land called Gaza.

Back home, winter is quickly wearing out its welcome, as the Pacific Northwest again was battered with heavy snow and the Midwest found itself threatened by flooding. Cynthia Bowers has more on the severe weather from coast to coast.

Amid rising unemployment, more Americans are choosing to repair things they might otherwise have thrown out during better economic times. Hari Sreenivasan reports on the "fix-it economy."

Finally tonight, Hawaii is already known for its tourism industry, but as President-elect Obama vacations in the Aloha State, local entrepreneurs have made a cottage industry out of the hometown hero's celebrity. Ben Tracy reports on how Hawaiians are riding the Obama wave.

I hope you'll join us tonight,

Maggie Rodriguez
