CBS Evening News with Katie Couric E-Mail Alert

Hi everyone, from St. Louis.

We're broadcasting live tonight from Missouri, as I continue my tour of the battleground states that will decide this presidential election. It’s been said that “as Missouri goes, so goes the nation.” And, in fact, Missouri has voted for the winner in all but one Presidential election in the past 100 years. So, I’ve asked Missouri voters to “show me” which way they’re leaning this year.

Also contributing to this series, called “Final Battleground,” are Jeff Greenfield, who reports on Ohio – a state where the candidates are neck-and-neck – and Brian Howey, who runs a political blog about Indiana. He examines why Republicans seem to be losing their hold on Hoosier voters.

Meanwhile, from the campaign trail, our Dean Reynolds and Chip Reid will have the very latest on what the candidates are doing today.

Now that the summer travel season is past, drivers are getting a big break at the pump. Gas prices dropped further below $3 a gallon today, easing back toward where they were a year ago. Nancy Cordes looks at driving habits … and what they have to do with the cost of fueling up.

Finally tonight: it's a weekly meeting of veterans – many still bearing the scars of war.  Each week they come together for a big steak dinner … and, as David Martin reports, a little taste of normalcy.

See you tonight,
