It is time for our country to start connecting the dots. Water is interrelated to other pressing environmental problems having to do with food, energy and catastrophic disasters, as several of our stories this week spell out. In a must-read piece Abrahm Lustgarten writes about how a hack job of a report by EPA, influenced by industry, declared a certain natural gas drilling practice perfectly acceptable, when it fact it is a huge threat to the safety of drinking water and a major health and environmental concern. Jeffrey Feldman also writes about how those Southern California wildfires are heavily influenced by groundwater abuse. It's time for the state to do something about its water problems or risk giving up its "green" label -- and of course a whole lot more. And I've also got a story this week about a great new on-line tool that helps you find local, sustainable food in your backyard and all over North America. The best part about the Eat Well Guide is that it has a special category where you can search for water friendly restaurants, farmers and shops. Thanks for reading, Tara Lohan |
