CBS Evening News with Katie Couric E-Mail Alert

Hi everyone,

Another ominous sign today that the economy is slowing: Consumer prices sank by a record amount last month – and that raises concerns about deflation. Falling gas prices played a big role in the decline. But the lower prices don't have Americans buying – and that's especially true in the auto industry. Despite that retailers and dealers are offering huge incentives to lure customers, thousands of un-sold cars are clogging up ports on the West Coast. Ben Tracy has the story.

Meanwhile, the heads of the Big Three automakers were back on Capitol Hill in search of a $25 billion bailout from Congress. Bob Orr sits down with GM CEO Rick Wagoner to hear why his company is asking for a lifeline to help them stay in business.

Next, will Senator Hillary Clinton be nominated for secretary of state … or not? Some of former President Clinton’s business deals and fundraising are under review, and Senator Clinton has yet to decide on the cabinet post. One position we do know about: former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has been chosen to become Secretary of Health and Human Services. Chip Reid has the latest as the Obama administration takes shape.

Two weeks after Election Day, two Senate races are still undecided, meaning Democrats still have a shot at gaining a total of 60 seats, which would give them a filibuster-proof majority.  I’ll speak exclusively tonight with Senator Joe Lieberman – who had been on the outs with Democrats for supporting John McCain. It’s his first interview since the election, and you won’t want to miss it.

Finally tonight: I sat down with a man who has made his living punching holes in conventional thinking. Tonight, best-selling Malcolm Gladwell explains why everything you think you know about what makes someone a success … might just be wrong.

See you later – and by the way, I'll be on The Late Show with David Letterman tonight, so don't forget to watch!
