Better ways to unload $3.5 million

It came down to this with Tommy Bowden: It is completely fair for Clemson fans to ask for at least one Atlantic Coast Conference title every 10 years. I get that. But for all the disgust with the Tigers' performances in close losses to Maryland and Wake Forest, the outrage among Clemson alums and other taxpayers about a state school paying Bowden $3.5 million not to coach is way more understandable. For instance, why do the people who negotiated that deal still have jobs?

USC still searching for a running game

A hundred yards. South Carolina's wobbly rushing offense would probably sign up for that each week. Especially considering how it's fared in SEC play. But even that isn't good enough, says Gamecocks left tackle Jarriel King. "To me, that's below average. I'm not going to lie to you," the North Charleston native said. "Some people might say, 'Well, if you get 98 yards, that's good.' I want at least 115 yards. ... If we can get our running backs 125 yards, 150 yards, that's superb to me." And it would be. Problem is, USC isn't approaching that right now.

Stallings high on Swinney

Clemson fans may be unsure of what to expect from interim football coach Dabo Swinney as he takes over after the resignation of Tommy Bowden, but there's at least one person who has no doubts. "Dabo Swinney will do an outstanding job," said former Alabama coach Gene Stallings. "He will be well-received, there's no doubt about that, and he's very capable. I have no doubts about that either." Swinney played for Stallings on Alabama's 1992 national championship team, and got his coaching start under Stallings as a graduate assistant.
