Thousands at Lincoln Memorial celebrate coming inauguration

WASHINGTON, D.C. â€" President-elect Barack Obama welcomed the massive crowd that has begun turning out for his inauguration Tuesday with a seven-minute Sunday address that touched on the nation's challenges and urged people to solve them.

Looking back on history - Rights activists reflect on events, people who made win possible

On whose shoulders does Barack Obama stand? The president-elect stands on the shoulders of public figures as diverse as the complex, idealistic, impassioned and contradictory nation itself, said several Lowcountry residents who each contributed their portion to make the country a better place.

    'Controlled chaos' takes over D.C.

WASHINGTON â€" Packed subway cars. Crowded sidewalks. Long lines and short tempers.

    Dream for all of us

WASHINGTON â€" I, too, have a dream. I dream that some day we'll have to be reminded that racism once cleaved our souls and made us wary of one another. That wars were fought, blood was spilled and lives were lost along the way.

Odes to Obama: A poem or two for the new president

Poets don't typically write to order. You can't just call them up and ask them for a poem. Not even for an inauguration. But The Associated Press did ask. And they did write.

    Arizona guns down the Eagles

    Defense powers Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH â€" The Pittsburgh Steelers outhit the Baltimore Ravens and outplayed them behind a steady-as-he-goes Ben Roethlisberger, marching into the Super Bowl behind a defense that brought back memories of the storied Steel Curtain.

USC plays host to 16 prospects

The University of South Carolina's biggest recruiting weekend of the month attracted 16 official visits but only two were not already committed to the Gamecocks — offensive lineman Quinton Washington of Timberland and athlete Travante Stallworth of Leesville, La. And neither left Columbia a...

Fort Dorchester boys thriving under 'new beginning'

The Fort Dorchester boys' basketball team had an impressive week, picking up victories over Region 8-AAAA foes Summerville and James Island. The team is 11-2, including 2-0 in league play. That's good enough for the Patriots to earn the No. 6 ranking in the statewide coaches' poll of Class AAAA teams.

Watercraft dealers look to steering sales through economic storm

Tim Clark knows the annual Charleston Boat Show is sailing into a stiff economic headwind. But the co-owner and sales manager for Longshore Boats near Daniel Island, who also happens to be chairman of the event, is optimistic the exhibition will buoy dealers' spirits and, hopefully, their sales.
