What a hardworking media organization looks like

Help secure AlterNet's future
rule

Dear Reader,

Greetings from all of us at AlterNet. We're here to tell you that we work very hard every day to give you the best journalism and information available -- great writers, brilliant visions, investigative digging, critical analysis, mind-blowing opinions, and even articles that help take your mind off of the problems of the world, because everyone needs to take a breather sometimes.

We are writing you with a simple plea: If you can, please support our work. Now is the time. The year is almost up.* Click here to help.

There are new opportunities and big challenges ahead. We'll all need to match our hope for the future with the tough love necessary to achieve solutions that will benefit all Americans -- not just a few. To win these victories will require a strong and independent media. And for this, there is no better investment than AlterNet.

AlterNet exposes the crooks on Wall Street, and the villains lobbying for greedy interests. We fight for quality healthcare for everyone. We unmask the horrible war on drugs. We work to get our troops out of Iraq quickly and safely. We offer the ideas and vision that will pull us out of this painful recession and help us weather this economic storm. Every day we present alternatives to the overconsumption that has riddled our society.

To put it simply: we are all in this together and AlterNet is here to serve you -- to keep you informed, stimulated, angry when necessary, and hopeful for the long run.

We promise to work our butts off every day of 2009, to deliver you the writers, the topics, the stories, and the insights that will keep us all on top of our game -- the elements that will help us change America into the country we need it to be, one that ensures a healthy and meaningful future for all of us.

We promise to be here for you -- here to help make sure that the progressive positions on the issues we all care about are as loud, strong, and clear as ever. Will you be there for us at this critical moment?

We hope so.

Happy Holidays from all of us,

Don Hazen
The Staff at AlterNet

P.S. Need one more reason? If you make a commitment to AlterNet's future with a monthly gift of $10 or more, we will send you our newest book, "The Best of AlterNet 2008" -- a compilation of our greatest coverage for the year. Click here to become an AlterNet sustainer.

*P.P.S. A huge "thank you" from all of us to all of you who have already contributed to our year-end campaign!

CBS News Sunday Morning: Condi Rice Reflects

Dec. 26, 2008

Hello, everyone,

We are now less than a month away from the end of George W. Bush’s two-term presidency. A lot has happened in that time, including the 9/11 attacks, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the global economic meltdown, just to mention a few. During the past eight years, one person has been a consistent player within Mr. Bush’s administration, Condoleezza Rice. Correspondent Rita Braver sits down with the Secretary of State to discuss the state of the world, her place in history, and some of Ms. Rice’s personal joys, such as playing the piano.

Pianist Michael Feinstein is doing his part to preserve the nation’s history in song. He is compiling music from the 1930s to the 1960s, all part of the American songbook, which he hopes to keep alive for generations to come. He’ll be ringing in the New Year with correspondent Russ Mitchell, singing some of those old favorites.

We’ll be saluting some old favorites as well. Charles Osgood will give a hearty “Hail and Farewell” to the people we lost this year who touched our lives in so many different ways.

Nancy Giles and Mo Rocca will be stopping by to share their thoughts on New Year’s resolutions, and Bill Geist will take to the heavens to introduce us to some folks who have given new meaning to the term “high dining.”

All that and more, this Sunday Morning. Listen for our trumpet!

About Today: Is It Really on Sale?

  from Jen Hubley
The holidays are about halfway over. If you, like me, are sitting in the middle of a pile of crumpled wrapping paper, blowing wanly into a noisemaker, it might do you good to turn your thoughts toward the second-most wonderful time of the year: After-holiday sales.

In the Spotlight
Is It Really on Sale?
I'm a sucker for a sale. I also tend to believe signs, which can be a problem. Just because your local retailer claims something's on sale, doesn't necessarily mean it's true. Here's how to tell if you're getting the real deal.

How to Get a Deal During the Sales Rush
The best tip is to think ahead. Now is a perfect time to stock up on holiday stuff for next year. For example, by the end of today, my Mom will have enough wrapping paper to wrap your house inside and out, and she'll get it for about 35 cents.

Make the Most of After-Christmas Sales
Hitting the sales today? Here's how to work the system. Do your homework ahead of time and don't forget those coupons. (Mine are usually in my other purse.)
