In honor of service

Charles Woolard once had a commanding officer tell him "it's a good time to be in the military." Woolard, a Marine Corps medic at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station, understood exactly what he meant.

Museum salutes U.S. veterans

MOUNT PLEASANT â€" The wars have new names, the troops fight with modern weapons and the politics play out back home. But to the veterans who served, the details of conflicts past and present matter less than the bond they share through their military service.

VIETNAM: WILLIAM GREEN

He was a student and bookseller before he became a drill sergeant. William Green went to New York to work by day and study by night. Soon after his classes at Hunter College began in 1970, the draft notice appeared.

WORLD WAR II: DICK WHITAKER

Dick Whitaker jokes that he joined the Marine Corps in 1944 because "I saw too many John Wayne movies, I guess." But John Wayne was never shipped to Okinawa to see the fighting Whitaker did. On March 13, 1945, his 19th birthday, Whitaker boarded a transport headed for the reinforced Japanese island, splashing ashore two weeks later for what would be the last major fight of World War II.

VIETNAM: RONALD FORSYTHE

Ronald Forsythe remembers flying by radar over the jungles of Vietnam, dipping below the clouds for touch-and-gos at Khe Sanh and countless tiny villages with names that he never even learned.

USC's Garcia, Smelley tag-team Razorbacks

COLUMBIA â€" South Carolina got stuck on six wins a year ago. The Gamecocks, with some vintage quirky coaching by Steve Spurrier, appeared bent on keeping it from happening again.

Two QBs are better than none

COLUMBIA â€" Leave it to Steve Spurrier to give a whole new meaning to the term quarterback rotation. Against Arkansas on Saturday, the South Carolina coach switched QBs on almost every single play in a game the Gamecocks won, 34-21. Although sophomore Chris Smelley officially started the game for USC, Stephen Garcia, a redshirt freshman, came in on the second play and every other play after that.

Johnson hopes to shake Edwards' title pursuit

AVONDALE, Ariz. â€" Carl Edwards chipped into Jimmie Johnson's points lead with consecutive victories at Atlanta and Texas. Now the championship race has moved into the desert, where Johnson has traditionally turned up the heat on the competition.

Culliver meltdown will cost USC next week

COLUMBIA â€" With Saturday's game against Arkansas in hand, South Carolina safety Chris Culliver might have hurt the Gamecocks for their test this week at Florida.

Tigers' hopes continue to evaporate with loss

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. â€" It felt a lot like the good old days for Florida State on Saturday night. The No. 24 Seminoles looked dominant in dusting an ACC rival, and thereafter good vibes were all around as they sang happy birthday to their coach, 79-year-old Bobby Bowden.

Obama proposals include retirement plan changes

The election is over and the message is clear â€" the economy is priority one. The big question now is how some of President-elect Barack Obama’s campaign proposals will affect retirees and workers with 401(k) and other retirement accounts. Looking at them a bit closer may reveal some clues.

AUTO BRIEF

You can always expect a lot of Fords at the yearly show put on by the Low Country Mustang Club.

Car Talk

Q. My neighbor is an elderly gent with fairly advanced Alzheimer’s disease. His wife was called out of town and left both of their cars disabled (disconnected the batteries, probably) so he wouldn’t drive off on his own. Well, he did try to drive off on his own, and the cars failed to start. So he walked to a mechanic on the corner and asked for help. The next thing you know, an Escort with 90,000 miles and a Taurus with 23,000 miles are running, and are driven off to the mechanic. Later that afternoon, my neighbor showed me four pages of computer-printed estimates (printed on the back of old deli menus, by the way) totaling $4,700 to fix his cars.

CAR SHOW CALENDAR

Today Coastal Carolina Corvette Club will present the “Homes for the Holidays” Open Car, Bike & Truck Show, sponsored by Marathon Chevrolet of Summerville. The show will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Registration, which is $10 per vehicle, will begin at 11 a.m. at Marathon Chevrolet on Main Street in Summerville.

Recent gathering in Charleston area brings together vintage Model A Fords

Pardon the pun, but there was a rare local meeting last month: fans of the Model A â€" and model tea. The gathering, actually, involved a group of Model A Fords from three states. They converged on the Charleston area Oct. 25 for drives, dining and tours. Notably, the vintage cars and their owners paraded to Charleston Tea Plantation on Wadmalaw Island for a visit and photos.
