Vought idles 50 workers

Labor strife at Boeing Co. has forced one of the company's North Charleston suppliers to lay off employees, dismiss contractors, suspend work and prepare for the possibility of a temporary plantwide shutdown. Vought Aircraft Industries Inc. said Friday it could no longer afford to keep its fuselage factory at Charleston International Airport operating with a full staff in light of the dramatically reduced work load.

Inabinett arrested on theft charges

A Ravenel town councilman was arrested on grand larceny charges last week after a boat dealership reported the theft of an engine part. When North Charleston police questioned Curtis Inabinett Jr., he told them that he and two acquaintances had permission to take scrap metal from the business. Asked about a lower unit missing from a 30-foot Maxum boat, he told them "that he heard that they shouldn't have taken the part," according to a police report.

Cuts imperil safety, officials warn

South Carolina is gambling with the public's safety by cutting $2 million from the agency that monitors thousands of habitual criminals free on probation and parole, top law enforcement officials warned Thursday. Just last month, legislative leaders talked of boosting money for the state Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, saying the agency is seriously understaffed and needs more resources to effectively perform its mission. But that was before the current economic crisis sent South Carolina's budget into a tailspin.

Ex-cop gets no jail time

A former Charleston County sheriff's deputy was given a split sentence of eight months in a halfway house and eight months of home detention Friday for kicking a handcuffed suspect after a car chase through West Ashley last year. Christopher M. Lanoue, 25, pleaded guilty in April to kicking Joseph Jefferson in the neck and head area after Jefferson was cuffed and on the ground.

1 charter gets approval, 1 must try again

Drayton Hall Elementary cleared another hurdle on its journey to converting to a charter school, but the proposed Apple Charter School failed the same test and will have to wait another year before it can open. Groups that want to open a charter school must receive approval from the state Charter School Advisory Committee, which met earlier this week.

Wet and Mild

Week 9 of Friday Night Lights turned into a rainy daze. Numerous games in the Lowcountry were postponed Friday, and a good number of the contests were postponed during or after the afternoon rush hour. The late decisions to reschedule the games caused frustration, confusion and, in some cases, anger.

Moyer makes his first Series pitch

PHILADELPHIA â€" The 100th anniversary of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" was Friday. No truth to the tale that Jamie Moyer was the first to sing it. In a World Series full of juicy subplots, perhaps the most intriguing of all is about to play out: Can a 45-year-old man with a heater that rarely cracks 85 mph stop a lineup stacked with brash boppers? Game 3 is tonight, weather permitting, when the ol' left-hander and the Phillies face the Tampa Bay Rays with the teams tied at a game apiece.

Bulldogs face 'huge' challenge at Samford

Citadel football players were rightly impressed last week with Furman's outsized tackle, 6-7, 320-pound Joel Bell. Today, the Bulldogs face an offensive line stacked with Joel Bells. Led by senior left tackle Mitchell Waters (6-6, 308), Samford's starting line goes 6-7, 312; 6-4, 306; 6-6, 330; and 6-4, 318.

Bucs try to derail Liberty's chances

Something quite unusual happened in Lynchburg, Va., last week. Liberty lost a football game. The 35-21 loss to Lafayette snapped an 11-game win streak for coach Danny Rocco's team, ending the longest streak in school history and putting put a dent in Liberty's bid to make the FCS playoffs.

No hype needed for Hampton showdown

South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough is certain that he won't need any big pre-game speech this afternoon. Just one word should suffice â€" Hampton. S.C. State takes on a Hampton in a showdown for first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg.

Pump prices return to levels of a year ago

Christian Smith doesn't break the bank at the pump these days. "I don't feel like I'm making life decisions when I go the gas station now," the West Ashley resident said as he pumped $5 in regular gasoline into his car Friday, paying $2.69 a gallon at a Hess Station on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. A month ago he dished out at least $1 more per gallon for the liquid gold that carries him around Charleston.

No cutbacks on bankers' pay

NEW YORK â€" Despite the Wall Street meltdown, the nation's biggest banks are preparing to pay their workers as much as last year or more, including bonuses tied to personal and company performance. So far this year, nine of the largest U.S. banks, including some that have cut thousands of jobs, have seen total costs for salaries, benefits and bonuses grow by an average of 3 percent from a year ago, according to an Associated Press review.

Fed exec: It's not the worst of times

A recent Time magazine cover showed the food lines during the Great Depression under the headline "The New Hard Times." If the idea was to compare then and now, it's not even close, according to Gerald Dwyer, vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. "There is a lot of overwrought discussion," Dwyer told about 120 business students Friday at the College of Charleston.

Forecast looks brighter for holiday travel

ATLANTA â€" Minneapolis business manager Roque Rossetti plans to make his annual trip home to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for Christmas. The 35-year-old said the sagging economy gave him no second thoughts about shelling out $1,200 for the ticket. "If I wait longer, I'd probably pay more, and I might not end up going," he said. But, he added, "I'm secure. I don't have kids or a wife. My house is paid for."

With the electoral map looking increasingly like the 2008 election is Obama's to lose, the McCain camp, not surprisingly, is going through the usual recriminations. The Guardian reports that morale has tanked among campaign staffers ...

Staff at his headquarters, in Arlington, Virginia, are already speaking about his campaign in the past tense and some, with hopes of a White House job diminishing, have sent out job resumes.

Mark McKinnon, who had been a key member of McCain's team during the nomination battles but then left, told the Politico website: "If you really want to see what 'going negative' is in politics, just watch the back-stabbing and blame game that we're starting to see."

Of course, the race isn't over until it's over, and given that Democrats smelled victory in both 2000 and 2004, the Obama camp is reportedly taking nothing for granted.
