Dump would be more than just a landfill

Every year, the businesses and 36,000 residents of rural Williamsburg County toss out about 45,000 tons of trash, enough to fill about 1,800 garbage trucks. And for years, much of this refuse has ended up in the county's landfill, a primitive pit with a history of environmental problems. So when a North Carolina waste disposal company offered to build a new dump and pay for the closure of the old one, Stanley Pasley, the county supervisor, was all ears.

    More eyes on parking cheaters

A spike in tickets, the opening of a new downtown garage and a recent newspaper series appear to have parking cheaters on the run. In May, The Post and Courier Watchdog team exposed how motorists in search of free and convenient parking illegally used parking privileges intended for the disabled.

    Condos' design is win-win

The new condominiums rising east of Concord Park aren't notable only for their spacious piazzas or their harbor views or their luxurious interiors.

Clemson recruiting getting back on track

The coaching transition from Tommy Bowden to Dabo Swinney stalled Clemson's recruiting efforts for a few weeks, but the Tigers are getting back to normal now and have a shot at commitments from three prospects who will make decisions over the next two weeks.

Undefeated Tigers roll in ACC opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. â€" K.C. Rivers scored 28 points and No. 25 Clemson easily overcame an early 12-point deficit on the way to beating Miami, 91-72, on Sunday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. Terrence Oglesby added 17 points for the Tigers (12-0, 1-0), who kept pace with No. 3 Pittsburgh for Division I's best record this season. Pitt stayed perfect by beating Florida State earlier Sunday.

    Rays come up short

Charlotte â€" Paul Kelly scored the game's first goal in the third period Sunday night to give South Carolina the lead, but the Stingrays eventually fell in a shootout, 2-1, to the Charlotte Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
