TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

We’ll begin tonight with the astounding allegations against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. He’s accused of trying to “sell” Barack Obama’s Senate seat, among other charges. In announcing the arrest, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said “the conduct would make Lincoln turn over in his grave.” Blagojevich is also accused of trying to strong-arm the Chicago Tribune into firing members of the paper’s editorial board. Dean Reynolds reports from Chicago and Jeff Greenfield joins us to shed some light on the history of corruption … in Illinois politics.

In Washington, lawmakers are still hammering out some final details of the proposed $15 billion auto industry bailout. They're hoping to reach an agreement by the end of the day, and Sharyl Attkisson has the very latest.

Also tonight: A CBS News exclusive report on domestic bombings. What has authorities very concerned is who is behind the majority of them. As Armen Keteyian reports, there's a brazen new generation of bombers right here in the United States.

Dr. Jon LaPook follows up on his October report that certain vitamins might do very little - or nothing - to help stave off some cancers. Today, a prominent medical journal weighed in on the matter. We'll show you the evidence tonight.

Finally tonight: what happens when extreme auto mechanics go eco-friendly? Hari Sreenivasan shows us the art of transforming gas-guzzlers into lean, green machines.

See you tonight,
Katie

And here's an early look at one of the stories we are working on for Wednesday’s broadcast: We have an update to a story we first brought you last month about a town in crisis....and a restaurant on the verge of going out of business. We'll tell you how the employees are doing in our special series, The Other America, Wednesday night only on the THE CBS EVENING NEWS.

TONIGHT ON DAVID LETTERMAN

Join Dave tonight with Actress Amy Adams, Actor Michael Sheen… Plus musical guest Jamey Johnson!

WEDNESDAY MORNING ON THE EARLY SHOW

Julie Chen, Maggie Rodriguez, Harry Smith, Russ Mitchell will anchor the EARLY SHOW from New York. Dave Price will bring us the weather.

Along with the top stories, we are currently working on the following segments:

WOMEN INVESTORS MAKING BIG BUCKS -Despite the sagging stock market, there are some people who are finding that this is a good time to invest their money - with the help of friends…call it a “book club” of sorts. However, instead of getting together, once a month, to discuss the latest best sellers, stocks are the topic of choice. It's a trend that's becoming more popular, especially, with women of all ages. Early Show financial contributor Vera Gibbons will be here to tell you why these work and how you can do it too.

ACTOR JAMES FRANCO OF THE NEW MOVIE “MILK” -Many actors strive for the year James Franco is having. This summer he received, not only rave reviews but also stellar attendance at the box office for the stoner comedy "Pineapple Express." Now Franco is receiving Oscar buzz for his role as activist Harvey Milk's lover and confidante in the new film "Milk." He will join us in the studio to talk about this new controversial film, and what it was like to act opposite Sean Penn in the intimate sex scenes.

HOLIDAY FASHIONS AND OUTFITS FOR LESS THAN $100 -Looking for the perfect holiday dress for that special occasion, but, you aren’t a perfect size six and you also don’t want to break the bank? Amy Goodman from All You Magazine will have five outfits on hand for five different figure types, all at less than 100 dollars. A segment your viewers won’t want to miss.

THE PERFECT GIFT: COOKIES - When giving gifts for the holidays, sometimes homemade is the best. And what are some of the best homemade treats for the Holidays? Cookies of course! Lucinda Scala Quinn, Director of food at “Martha Stewart Living” will join us to show us some of her favorite cookie recipes, and some beautiful ways to present them as gifts.

R&B SINGER BRANDY PERFORMS LIVE! - It’s hard to believe that it was just 15 years ago when singer Brandy first emerged on to the scene. For the past decade and a half, the Grammy Award-winning Mississippi native has kept busy -- selling over 25 million albums, starring in her own sitcom, and becoming a mother. Brandy will sing "Departed" from her newly released album "Human.”

Stop the epidemic of rape in Congo

AlterNet: The Mix is the Message

rule

Dear Reader,

The war in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been raging for years, leaving millions dead and countless others attacked and displaced. Women and young girls are the target of one of the most despicable acts of war -- rape. The International Violence Against Women Act will provide increased protection and services for women and girls facing gender-based violence. It is essential that we protect women and girls from this unspeakable act. Join CARE and ask your member of Congress to support the International Violence Against Women Act today.

Tell Congress to help stop the epidemic of rape in Congo! URGENT: DISASTER ALERT
Tell Congress to pass the International Violence Against Women Act. Contact Congress >

Dear Friend,

War has ravaged the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for more than two decades. Almost 5.5 million are dead. Untold millions have been brutally attacked, mutilated and displaced.

Women and young girls, in particular, are singled out for one of the most heinous tools of war -- rape.

Speak out now and tell Congress to stand up to gender-based violence and pass the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA).

IVAWA will increase protection and services for women and girls facing gender-based violence, and direct more U.S. funding to violence prevention abroad. Do your part today and tell Congress to support IVAWA.

CARE staff has been on the ground in the DRC working with local community members to address the causes and consequences of violence against women and girls; however, much remains to be done to address this humanitarian crisis. Please, tell Congress to take action now and do everything in their power to stop the rape of women and girls in war-torn regions around the world like the DRC.

The targeted nature of this violence, especially in the context of war, is devastating. Rape survivors' scars and other physical disfigurements tell only half the story -- the emotional traumas that accompany them are unfathomable. You can help protect women and young girls around the world from gender-based violence -- send a letter to your member of Congress today and urge them to pass the International Violence Against Women Act.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

HELENE D. GAYLE, MD, MPH
