School board gives superintendent good marks

The Charleston County School Board gave Superintendent Nancy McGinley a good grade for her first 18 months as chief of the state's second biggest district. But three board members â€" David Engelman, Arthur Ravenel Jr. and Ray Toler â€" did not fill out review forms that were compiled and used to rate McGinley. Those same members also voted against the one-year contract extension, $8,000 performance bonus and $300 monthly travel allowance increase the board agreed to give the superintendent.

Utility's plan stirs coal-ash debate

On the banks of the Great Pee Dee River, Santee Cooper wants to build a giant power plant that would consume 410 tons of coal every hour and generate enough electricity for 600,000 homes. Burning all that coal also will generate huge volumes of potentially harmful ash, and Santee Cooper plans to store it in a landfill and holding pond on a bluff above the river.

Ash landfill causes concern

Near Moncks Corner, in the quiet Whitesville community, SCE&G operates an ash landfill for its Williams generating station. For years, wells drilled to monitor groundwater around the landfill didn't reveal any pollution problems â€" until 2004 when engineers put them in places where contamination was more likely to occur.

Suspect named in string of break-ins

Alternately polite and foul-mouthed, a brazen burglar has slipped in and out of darkened downtown homes for weeks, startling sleepy-eyed Charleston residents and inspiring fear in his quest for quick cash. Charleston police say some undisclosed evidence has helped them finally put a name to this mysterious, early morning creeper. The prime suspect in the string of break-ins is a 23-year-old Charleston man who has a previous burglary conviction on his record, authorities said Monday.

Mom: Shooting was an accident

JOHNS ISLAND â€" Roberto "Robbie" Valdez's family members were worried about the bad friends he made while living in Illinois, so they packed up and moved to Johns Island. On Saturday afternoon, the 15-year-old freshman at St. Johns High School was playing with a .22-caliber pistol and accidentally shot himself to death, his mother, Christina Pulcher, said. "He thought it was unloaded."

Unemployment, rising cost of living boost number of those losing homes

Shoppers who are watching their wallets have led stores to cut back their orders and factories to trim production, a scenario that puts truck driver Charles Hayes in danger of losing his Goose Creek home. With fewer deliveries to make, the small company he works for switched to a four-day work week to keep all 16 drivers on the payroll.

Builder with nothing to build in busted boomtown

LAS VEGAS â€" Sitting on his shady veranda, tanned and trim, Lou DeSangro looks like a man who's made it. From the backyard of the dream home he built himself, he admires his rock grotto fountain, glittering pool and a custom outdoor kitchen.

Turning the SPA greener

Jeannie Adame is the living, breathing, latest item on the State Ports Authority's laundry list of environmental initiatives. She is the SPA's first environmental affairs manager. And she has plenty to manage. Over the past two years, the SPA has beefed up its efforts to reduce pollution. Last year the agency signed an agreement with the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to reduce emissions.

Let the bank bailout begin

WASHINGTON â€" The government prepared Monday to move the first batch of bailout money to banks as fretful world markets plunged again. Wall Street ended with a big drop at the closing bell, sending the Dow Jones industrials to their lowest close since the financial meltdown began.

Few trees fall in forest

ACKSON, Miss. â€" The glut of homes in foreclosure, vacant, or stuck on the market has the nation's lumber industry hanging on by a limb. Since housing starts hit their peak in mid-2005, demand for lumber used in floors, home frames and cabinets has declined sharply, and experts say the number of unsold homes would need to significantly decrease before homebuilders commit to building new ones.

Difficult road lies ahead for Tigers to become bowl eligible

CLEMSON â€" In recent years, Clemson's football team has come up with all kinds of catchy slogans to outline its expectation of reaching the ACC title game. With those hopes extinguished, the Tigers probably won't bother devising any mottos that reflect their dramatically downgraded expectations.

Series in limbo

PHILADELPHIA â€" Game 5 of the World Series was suspended because of rain in the sixth inning Monday night with the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays tied at 2 and the field already a sloppy, soggy mess. "I can't tell you tonight when we'll resume," commissioner Bud Selig said. "We'll stay here if we have to celebrate Thanksgiving here."

Higgins has been here before

Lots of football coaches come into town boasting of their "five-year plan." Kevin Higgins actually pulled off the five-year plan at Lehigh.

Longtime pro wrestler S.D. Jones dead at 63

Former professional wrestler S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones passed away Sunday on his native island of Antigua, West Indies, from complications related to a stroke he suffered two days earlier. He was 64. Jones, whose real name was Conrad Efraim, retired several years ago and moved from the Bronx to Antigua with his wife.

C of C women tied for second

Kiawah Island â€" Steffi Kirchmayr shot even-par 72 and Emily Rapp a 74 to lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to a tie for second after the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate being held at Oak Point Golf Course.

There was more bad news for the McCain campaign today. The New York Times reported that the Republican Party has just bought up between $300,000 and $400,000 of ad time in Montana, a traditionally red state. As the Times states, Montana "is rarely ever considered in need of defending for Republicans during presidential campaigns."

The need to pour money into red states is yet another sign of how much the McCain campaign is struggling in the final days before the election.

BREAKING NEWS

Defense rests in Nichols case

Brian Nichols rested his insanity defense Monday without taking the witness stand to convince jurors in his murder trial that he is not in his right mind.
Lead prosecuting attorney Kellie Hill told Superior Court Judge James Bodiford that the state would spend three days calling witness to rebut a psychologist's claim that Nichols suffers from a delusional disorder that made him think he was leading a "slave rebellion" against the justice system. The jury is expected to start deliberating next week after about six weeks of trial.

A purple tomato and its healing properties...that story tonight on The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

(CBS) QUOTE OF THE DAY
“Don't tell me where your priorities are. Show me where you spend your money and I'll tell you what they are.”
- James W. Frick

DID YOU KNOW?
Chocolate syrup was used for blood in the famous 45 second shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's movie, Psycho, which actually took 7 days to shoot.

TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here's an early look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric

Hi everyone,

In eight days, Americans will elect a new president. Barack Obama is making what his campaign called his "closing argument" today. At rallies in Ohio and Pennsylvania, he called for ending Wall Street greed - and championing the middle class. Dean Reynolds has the latest.

For John McCain, this final stretch is all about the economy, taxes and jobs. He's also in Ohio today as he heads into the final sprint to the finish line. Chip Reid is with the McCain campaign.

And I'll have the rest of the news from the trail in our Campaign '08 Notebook. Also, if you watched our show last Friday, you learned that Las Vegas casino chiefs have stacked their chips behind the McCain campaign. Tonight, Sharyl Attkisson investigates where Barack Obama gets the bulk of his campaign funding in what has become the most expensive election in history.

Aside from the presidential race, one election battle that’s getting a lot of attention is in South Dakota. Known as Initiative 11, this measure would make abortion a crime, except in the case of rape, incest or the health of the mother. Kelly Cobiella reports if it passes, its ramifications could go far beyond state borders.

Also tonight: Dr. Jon LaPook has an important story about research into preventing prostate cancer. And Cynthia Bowers has the latest developments in the massive manhunt - that seems to now have ended - for Jennifer Hudson's 7-year-old nephew.

Finally tonight, whether you say "tomato" or "to-MAH-to," this new version of this fruit will leave you saying "huh?!" Mark Phillips shows us a tomato of a different color.

See you tonight, Katie

And here's an early look at one of the stories we are working on for Tuesday’s broadcast: As seniors face sky high premiums and prescription costs…what can they expect from Medicare in the future? We'll look at how John McCain and Barack Obama plan to fix the system in our series, Where They Stand, Tuesday night on the THE CBS EVENING NEWS.

Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriquez and Julie Chen anchor the broadcast. Russ Mitchell reports the news and Dave Price reports the weather.

In addition to the top news of the day, we will also feature the following stories

AMANDA KNOX MURDER CASE DEVELOPMENTS - Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old student from Leeds University in England, was found dead in her bedroom November 2, 2007 from a stab wound to the neck. Prosecutors say she was killed while an unwilling participant of a sex game between Knox, Raffaele Sollecito and Rudy Guede. Prosecutors rejected claims Monday that police who handled the murder case of a British exchange student in Perugia Italy, contaminated evidence used for its case. The court ordered that the American exchange student from Seattle Washington, Amanda Knox, and former Italian boyfriend, Sollecito stand trial for the murder. We will bring you the latest developments in this case, live from Italy.

OIL PRICES ARE COMING DOWN BUT OTHER PRICES AREN'T - Oil prices are dropping and people around the country are rejoicing! But what about those expensive food and airline prices? Why haven’t they come down? Hattie Kauffman will do a report on the prices around the country - why they are still going up despite the decrease in oil prices…and when you will see relief.

OBAMA’S BARBER SHOP - Early Show contributing correspondent Laura Schwartz will be reporting live from the Hyde Park Barber Shop, where Barack Obama has been a loyal customer for over 10 years. She will find out how often he visits the shop, how much he pays, how much he tips…and why the customers and employees are already planning a “victory party” in Obama’s honor.

ENERGY DIET - Susan Koeppen put one family on a new “energy diet”… They changed light bulbs to more energy efficient ones, they remembered to turn off lights, they cleaned lint drawer, washed clothing in cold water, turned off heat dry on dishwasher, insulated pipes, etc...And in the end -- their power company says they will save 1100 dollars a year based on the changes they made. We’ll show you how you can do the same thing and save big bucks.

HALLOWEEN DVDS - With Halloween coming just around the corner, Dalton Ross, Entertainment Weekly's editor-at-large, discusses his favorite horror movies that are available on DVD. His picks are Night of the Living Dead, Halloween, The Shining, Psycho, and The Exorcist. The Early Show anchors will also share some of their own favorite horror movies.

Cooking brings flavor to the forefront, teaches important math skills, and yes, even teaches science. From the thermo-dynamics of heat, to the chemistry of gastronomy; there is all sorts of science involved with food. And from creating electric lollipops to edible underwear, The Hungry Scientist walks readers (techies, foodies and science junkies) through the interesting scientific aspects of food.
