Africa News Today - Stop discrimination of models of colour in UK; Black BUT Invisible campaign: “When we come together we can force change”
| Stop discrimination of models of colour in UK; Black BUT Invisible campaign: "When we come together we can force change" |
5th January 2009: The blantant discrimination of models of colour in the UK must stop now. "London is recognised as one of the most diverse cities in the world but this is not reflected in the models used during the London Fashion Week's and many of the other Fashion Weeks across the world," says Sola Oyebade of Mahogany Model Management.
It is time to act to bring to an end such discrimination of models who are fully part of this society. It is shameful in deed that racial discrimination can still be practiced in the modern world in an such an open manner.
What is needed now and urgently is strong action to make people acting in this manner know that we are aware of the injustice they are practising against models of colour. This is exactly what the "Black BUT Invisible campaign" is out to achieve.
"Enough is enough, it is not good enough to take the money that we spend on consumer goods but then refuse to put a fair proportion of models of colour on the catwalk," says the campaign, adding that "They will not even be a little bit fake and let us audition and then say no."
"Black BUT Invisible campaign" claims that the British Fashion Council, organisers of London Fashion Week are blatantly open about the "industry Apartheid" they are practising.
The campaign is not just about giving the models of colour a fair chance. It is about general racial discrimination against the non-whites in the UK.
"Black BUT Invisible campaign" points out that "the black publications cannot get press accreditation to attend London Fashion Week because they are not ABC rated. This is not just about models, this is about discrimination generally and if we break down the visual barriers that people can blatantly see on catwalks and in magazines then other barriers will also eventually be broken down."
Sola gives an example of a major model agent that has laid bare the racial discrimination the fashion industry is riddled with.
Sola says that Premier Model Management's Carole White admitted that finding work for black clients was significantly harder than for the white models, as magazines and designers were reluctant to employ them.
Models from ethnic backgrounds "have to be perfect because we can't have a lot of diversity with black models."
"At style.com, three shows chosen at random featured black models in eight out of 136 photographs taken during the week. The March issue of Vogue – with more than 400 pages of editorial and advertising – has 14 shots with black or Asian women – two of them featuring Naomi Campbell. Isn't this an issue industry insiders should work to tackle, or is it just a case of giving people what they want?," the campaign asks.
What you can do
The "Black BUT Invisible campaign" notes that President (elect) Barak Obama has proven that, if you believe you can achieve, but first you must induce, convince, gather support and take action for your goals to be realised.
The campaign is therefore asking you to pass on this message to everyone you know and then ask them to pass it on to everyone they know. "We need the world's support to ensure that we achieve change," the campaign says.
You are also requested to support the campaign by writing, sending an email or making a phone call to the British Fashion Council, organisers of London Fashion Week to complain about this blatant discrimination. Warning over 'third-hand smoke'
Smoke contains toxins damaging to health |
Many people are unaware that even smoking away from babies or pregnant women presents a risk, according to US research.
Poisons in cigarette smoke can linger on fabrics or hair, but a survey of 1,500 households found that fewer than half of smokers knew this.
Only a quarter had strict rules about not smoking in the house, according to the report in the journal Pediatrics.
UK baby charity Tommy's said it was vital that pregnant women were alerted.
| Professor Jonathan Winickoff Massachusetts General Hospital |
There is plenty of evidence that "second-hand" smoke - breathed when you are in the same room as someone smoking - can be harmful, particularly to children, and some parents adopt a strategy of never smoking in their child's presence.
However, Professor Jonathan Winickoff, from Massachusetts General Hospital, said this would not offer complete protection.
Toxic particles in cigarette smoke can remain on nearby surfaces, as well as the hair and clothing of the smoker, long after the cigarette has been put out, and small children are susceptible because they are likely to breathe in close proximity, or even lick and suck them.
Other studies have linked this exposure to learning problems in children.
Breastfeeding mothers who smoke also pass toxins on to their baby in their milk, he said.
His team surveyed more than 1,500 households, asking smokers and non-smokers about their attitudes.
They found that while 95% of non-smokers and 85% of smokers agreed that direct inhalation of second-hand smoke was harmful to children, just 65% of non-smokers, and 43% of smokers believed the same for "third-hand" smoke.
Just 26.7% of households which included a smoker had strict rules about not smoking in the home.
Complication risk
Professor Winickoff said: "The dangers of third-hand smoke are very real - when you smoke - any place - toxic particulate matter from tobacco smoke gets into your hair and clothing."
Professor Andrew Shennan, from Tommy's, said the results had "significant implications", particularly for pregnant women, who may have stopped smoking themselves, but are still in contact with others that do.
"It is vital that women are made aware of the possible risks associated with third hand smoke, and alert those around them of the impact it could potentially have on the health of their unborn baby.
"The chemicals in cigarettes are known to significantly increase the risk of serious pregnancy complications."http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7813124.stm

Africa News Today - Stroke risk from smoking partner - The health benefits of quitting smoking likely extend beyond individual smokers to affect their spouses
Stroke risk from smoking partner
Second hand smoke has been linked to disease |
Being married to a smoker will significantly raise your risk of stroke, even if you don't smoke yourself, say researchers.
The Harvard University team looked at records of more than 16,000 people.
The American Journal of Preventative Medicine study found the risk rose by up to 72% for some non-smokers.
The stroke dangers to smokers are well known, but there are fewer studies which have explored the risk from passive smoking.
Since the introduction of smoking bans in public places across the UK, the home is now the most likely place for non-smokers to breathe second-hand smoke.
The Harvard study looked at people aged over 50, and their spouses, over a period of, on average, just over nine years.
After the results were adjusted for other factors which could influence stroke risk, non-smokers living in the same house as a smoker were found to be at far greater risk of stroke.
| Dr Maria Glymour Harvard University |
If the person had never-smoked, living with a smoker raised stroke risk by 42%. If he or she had smoked at some point in their lives, but given up, the increase in risk was even higher, at 72%.
Being married to a former smoker did not increase risk, suggesting that this extra risk would fall away if the partner stopped smoking.
Partner plea
Dr Maria Glymour, who carried out the research, said: "These findings indicate that spousal smoking increases stroke risk among non-smokers and former smoker.
"The health benefits of quitting smoking likely extend beyond individual smokers to affect their spouses - potentially multiplying the benefits of quitting smoking."
This advice was echoed by the Stroke Association, which said that passive smokers were nearly twice as likely to have a stroke compared with those not living in a smoky environment.
Joe Korner, from the association, said: "Smoking is a significant risk factor for stroke with a quarter of all strokes being linked to smoking and it can also contribute to high blood pressure which is the single biggest risk factor for stroke.
"We urge people to consider the effects that smoking has on their health and others around them and do all they can to reduce their risk of stroke."
