Here’s an early look at the stories we are working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric
Hi everyone,
With a public anxious to see what a new president will do in uncertain times, the transition of power is moving at warp speed. Less than a week after being elected president, Barack Obama met today with President Bush in the Oval Office. There were smiles and handshakes, as expected, but privately, the Obama team is looking into reversing dozens of President Bush's Executive Orders. Chip Reid is there with the full story.
During the campaign, Mr. Obama laid out a very ambitious White House agenda. But will he be able to deliver on his policy promises? Wyatt Andrews reports.
Meanwhile, the federal government is throwing insurance giant AIG an even bigger lifeline. The Fed and Treasury Department today announced a bolder bailout that’s nearly doubled - to $150 billion - saying it would promote market stability. Anthony Mason has this story and I'll have other troubling economic news in our Financial Notebook.
Also, in the midst of this credit crunch, plenty of Americans are ditching … credit. Is cash back in style? Randall Pinkston has a new installment of our series, Dollars & Sense.
Next: what could be a medical revelation, for the first time ever, doctors have used cholesterol-lowering Statins to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people with normal cholesterol levels. Dr. Jon LaPook explains why this new approach could save thousands of lives - and change the way doctors treat patients to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

BARACK OBAMA AND PRESIDENT BUSH’S MEETING - At 2pm on Monday, President Elect Barack Obama went to the White House to meet President Bush for the first time. Michelle Obama escorted him to this meeting, and this will be her first time to meet the first lady and get a tour of her future home. The President and Obama will speak alone for the first time, and although the campaign has been long and brutal on both men, by all accounts, it was a cordial meeting. We’ll find out what went on. CBS News Political Consultants, Dan Bartlett and Dee Dee Myers will analyze the significance of this meeting.
FIVE DAYS FIVE DECADES: THE 1960’S - The 1960’s brought a new wave of culture, style and music to America… as the baby-boomers took off their poodle skirts and headed out for a night of dancing in their polyester bell bottoms. Jackie O made headlines, The Beatles were all the rage…and man walked on the moon for the first time. We’ll take you back in time to look at the cherished 1960’s, that have changed our lives forever.
CHICKS OF THE 60’S - As part of Five Days Five Decades we are joined by 4 women from shows of that era..Barbara Eden, 74, Jeannie from "I Dream of Jeannie,” Barbara Feldon, 76, Agent 99 from "get Smart,” Kathy Garver Travis, 63, Cissy from Family Affair and Dawn Wells, 70, Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island! They’ll reminisce about what it was like growing up as a child star in the 60’s and how their lives have changed from it.
JACKIE O AND CARNABY STREET: 60’S FASHIONS - First Lady Jackie O had a style all her own, and it always made headlines - perhaps more in later years than in the 60’s. She is known for her grace and chic style, and we will look back at the clothes she wore. Also - Carnaby Street, a street in London, which was popular with followers of both hippie and mod style. We’ll remember how these styles influenced the clothing today, and how it has changed American as a whole!
THE FOUR TOPS PERFORM LIVE! - The quartet that helped define the Motown sound of the 1960’s - the Four Tops will be reuniting in our studio and perform a few of their greatest hits.
GRANDMOTHER GIVES BIRTH TO TRIPLETS - 56 year old Jaci Dalenberg from Wayne County, Ohio carried and delivered the triplets as a surrogate for her daughter, Kim Coseno. Elizabeth, Carmina and Gabriella, each weighing around 2 pounds, were born on October 11. Gabriella and Carmina are identical twins. The babies, who were not expected until December, are still at the hospital. Clinic officials said they think Dalenberg is one of the oldest surrogates, if not the oldest, in the United States.
