The budget cuts are some of biggest so far by a metro Atlanta system and include layoffs and reduced bus service. The school board took the action in the wake of a sour economy and an expected loss of at least $10.5 million in state funding.

Mark A. Washington, 38, the former head of Kentucky's child welfare system, takes over as the agency faces severe budget cuts due to the slowing economy, which threaten staffing levels and some services to families and children.

Teen charged in Riverdale drive-by killing
Clayton County police arrested Andre Rashad Weems, 19, Monday night on a murder warrant in the death of Dana Varner, 16. Weems is believed to have fired an AK-47 into a group of people standing in the yard of a Riverdale home, killing Varner.

Northwest deal worth $13 million for Delta CEO
Richard Anderson will get stock awards worth almost $13.6 million beginning next year for closing the carrier's buyout of Northwest Airlines, according to new filings. Delta employees, including their new co-workers from Northwest, are also getting stock.

Cox Communications plans to cut 460 jobs
Atlanta-based Cox Communications on Monday told employees that it plans to cut its work force by about 460 jobs, or 2 percent, using a mix of early retirement, attrition and possibly layoffs. Cox Communications is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, which also owns the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Carpet maker Mohawk reports $1.3 billion loss
Calhoun-based Mohawk's third-quarter results equated to a loss of $20.37 per share, vs. Wall Street's expectations of a $1.12-per-share profit.

Fla. school keeps name of Confederate general
Duval County School Board members voted 5-2 to the retain the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. The board's two black members cast the only votes to change the name. Forrest was a Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader. More than half Forrest High's students are black.

DNA confirms bones near crash are Fossett's
Authorities say they have positively identified some of millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett's remains: two large bones found a half-mile from where Fossett's plane crashed in California's Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes.

Five homeless shot to death in Los Angeles
The victims were gunned down over the weekend at a spot inhabited by the homeless. They were known mainly by their nicknames or just their first names, and Southern California's first significant rain of the season may have washed away evidence.
