A grand design

Georgette Carr's white picket fence is stained with a knee-high line of dirt, marking how high water rose at America and Cooper streets in Charleston when the area was deluged with rain on Oct. 24. Nearby, at Cooper River Court, pond-sized puddles remained on the ground six days after the rain fell. Dressed as a witch, Juanita Hill dodged them while escorting three children home from a Halloween party Thursday.

Cane Bay Elementary to have broad effect

MONCKS CORNER â€" The opening of a new Berkeley County elementary school next year will have a ripple effect on roughly 1,000 students at neighboring schools.

Mystery image leads to dig

Did wooden colonnade really exist? The image shows the grand home linked to its two flanker buildings by a colonnade. Experts at the museum house had never seen anything like it. But it was sent anonymously, with no information about the origin of the image other than a handwritten note, "Drayton Hall, back in the day," and the date "1765."

Fighting eyesores, hazards

MOUNT PLEASANT â€" On Friday, Hobcaw Creek was littered with abandoned sailboats and a sunken cabin cruiser. But that wasn't the worst of it. The shallows near Crab Bank, a protected bird rookery in Charleston Harbor, looked like a recreational vessel junkyard.

Cadet not defined by Crohn's

Cadet James Lewis, a 20-year-old sophomore at The Citadel, doesn't define himself by Crohn's disease. But the digestive disorder can strike any time. Crohn's disease is an inflammation of the digestive tract lining. Symptoms vary and can be embarrassing. Many suffer severe abdominal pain, weight loss and fatigue.

Clemson gets motor running

CLEMSON â€" Last week, Dabo Swinney equated Clemson's football team to a souped-up car that just needed some air in the tires and gas in the tank. Saturday's streak-snapping triumph at Boston College did enough to get the Tigers back on the road, but Swinney said there's still some work required to shape this into the ride he wants.

Spurrier downplays victory

COLUMBIA â€" Steve Spurrier decided a couple of weeks ago before the LSU game that South Carolina would begin downplaying games against traditional powers. Evidently the philosophy carried over to Tennessee, which is somewhat understandable since the Volunteers are uncharacteristically 3-6 after the 27-6 loss to USC here Saturday night.

Field goal helps keep Colts in contention

INDIANAPOLIS â€" Adam Vinatieri showed New England he's still the NFL's best clutch kicker. The Patriots' career scoring leader, who booted winning field goals in two of their Super Bowl victories and then let go as a free agent, kicked a 52-yarder with 8:05 left Sunday to give the Indianapolis Colts an 18-15 victory.

C of C wins 7th straight

Junior outside hitter Emily Sawin delivered a career-high 24 kills and sophomore setter Cole Dawley finished with a match-high 44 assists, 15 digs and added five blocks as the College of Charleston (19-6, 12-1) volleyball team outlasted Furman (14-12, 7-6) 3-2 Sunday for their seventh straight win. The Southern Conference match in Charleston included scores of 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-21 and 15-6.

Campbell's pick-free run put to test tonight

LANDOVER, Md. â€" Ben Roethlis- berger has nothing but admiration for the big zero that still sits on Jason Campbell's row of stats halfway through the season.
