Governor issues $5.8B proposal

COLUMBIA â€" Gov. Mark Sanford released a 300-page prescription Friday for spending $5.8 billion on government in the next fiscal year, a plan he said would put South Carolina back on track after months of dramatically falling tax collections have shrunken South Carolina's state budget to $6.1 billion from more than $7 billion approved last year.

Family hopes violence ends

Another young man is shot to death, but his family is hoping some good might come of the slaying. Parris M. Green, 17, was killed Thursday evening while walking near his house in North Charleston. A witness said a man shot Green to death about 6:30 p.m. near Mary Ford Elementary School, after chasing him down Accabee Road.

School sells McLeod

In a bid to shore up its finances, the American College of the Building Arts has sold McLeod Plantation back to the Historic Charleston Foundation and scrapped controversial plans to use the property for a college campus. "The college has nothing more to do with McLeod Plantation," said college President Colby M. Broadwater.

Jury convicts charity founder

North Charleston charity founder Albert Salmon Jr. was convicted of four state tax evasion charges Friday after a prosecutor described him as a slum lord who hid his fraud behind an adopted title of reverend. If he didn't call himself a man of the cloth, the case might be an open and shut prosecution of a businessman hiding assets, Assistant Attorney General Tom McDermott said.

Resident's surprise leads to shooting arrest

GOOSE CREEK â€" A Rutt Lane resident didn't have to look far for a man suspected of firing a gun across from Goose Creek High School on Thursday afternoon. He found him in his bed. After shots were fired about 2 p.m. at Prestige Car Wash on Red Bank Road, Berkeley County deputies spotted a suspect vehicle, a white Ford F-150 pickup truck, unoccupied near the Rutt Lane resident's home.

Got Your Goat: 22 Humorous Hoofed Mammals

Posted: 09 Jan 2009 03:00 PM CST

Did you know that a ‘Mountain Goat’ isn’t even a true goat? A combination of spreadable hooves, traction-providing pads and dewclaws (vestigial claws up behind their hooves) help them climb surfaces that would seem difficult even to the most sure-footed primate. We are so used to seeing larved, hooved, four-legged mammals walk heavily on the ground that watching one touch the sky is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

(Images via eickholt and wildphotons)

So why do they climb? Well, in some cases they get off the ground to escape predators. In others, they are simply seeking out a salt or mineral lick which may occupy them for hours once found - even at dizzying heights while a goat is perched in an impossibly precarious position as shown above. Kids (baby mountain goats) climb within hours of birth, though their parents often perch below to catch them just in case.

(Images via couse, keenan and pbase)

At up to 300 pounds per goat these creatures are all the more uncanny for their ability to carry such great weights up slopes as steep as 60 degrees or steeper. If that does not sound terribly steep, take out a measuring device and try climbing up something that steep yourself! Even at altitude the weather rarely seems to bother mountain goats - they can withstand up to -50 degree temperatures and winds of over 100 miles per hour.

Even with their formidable defenseive mechanisms, however, Mountain Goats are not immune to falls - or to predators. The Golden Eagle poses a significant threat to smaller mountain goats in particular. They can be forced off an edge or even carried away in their entirety. This video (from which the above screenshots were captured as stills) shows an amazed goat being quickly overwhelmed by a self-assured aerial predator.

Of course the (misnamed) Mountain Goat is not the only fascinating goat in the world. Tree Climbing Goats are likewise uncanny climbers that can scale the slimmest and most elastic of tree branches in search of food. Fainting Goats are a relatively recently discovered breed of goat that faint and fall over at the slightest sound. Finally, let’s not forget the six-horned goat - well, at least according to a chinese newspaper.

Curry brothers making marks at mid-majors

"I could shoot myself." That's what Winthrop coach Randy Peele said last week about his failure to seriously recruit Seth Curry out of high school. Peele should put away the rhetorical gun. A lot of sheepish college basketball coaches are feeling the same way about the Curry brothers, Davidson superstar Stephen and Liberty freshman Seth. Despite superior basketball bloodlines from father Dell Curry, a former NBA standout, both brothers were passed over by major programs only to wind up as mid-major stars.

Smelley leaving Gamecocks

COLUMBIA â€" On the same day South Carolina netted a quarterbacks coach, it lost a quarterback. Redshirt sophomore Chris Smelley announced Friday afternoon through the school that he intends to transfer with the intention of playing baseball at another school. "It's been a difficult decision, something I've been thinking and praying about for a while," Smelley said via a release.

What kind of show can fans anticipate?

COLUMBIA â€" Realistically, how could you know what to expect tonight inside the Colonial Life Arena? No, not the basketball game. Auburn and South Carolina will likely play a tight one, settled in the final minutes, in the teams' SEC openers. But what about the environment? It was a hot-button subject in Dave Odom's time here, and especially as that tenure wound down.

Cougars guard against 'letdown'

Although it may seem a bit bizarre to talk about a basketball team having a "letdown" after consecutive losses, that may be a concern for College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins. Charleston enters today's 4 p.m. Southern Conference game against Georgia Southern at Carolina First Arena coming off losses to Davidson and North Carolina, and after getting ramped up to play against two of the nation's elite teams can the Cougars muster the necessary effort to beat the Eagles?

Cardinals-Panthers offenses ready to take off

CHARLOTTE â€" They take up three of the four receiver spots on the NFC Pro Bowl squad. Another is having a breakout year and a fifth is one of the league's top blockers at the position. Today's NFC Divisional playoff between the Carolina Panthers (12-4) and Arizona Cardinals (10-7) overflows with talent, speed, diversity and strength at receiver.
