Help AlterNet continue to expose the facts on Palin!

As the 2008 election comes down to the wire, AlterNet is operating at full throttle. We are covering it all, from the sleaze to the inspiration, from voter suppression to the shocking nomination of Sarah Palin. In fact, we've probably organized more information on this woman than anywhere else on the web. And in the past two months, over 3 million people have come to AlterNet to read about the pratfalls and far-right ideas of McCain's VP choice.

Now is the home stretch. But because of the global financial meltdown, our budget is quickly shrinking just as we need to be going all out. Will you help us finish the year with a bang?

We could really use your support.

Much Thanks,

Don Hazen, Executive Editor

Google, Yahoo Ad Deal Unlikely
Mike Sachoff | Staff Writer

Not looking good

Google and Yahoo may abandon their planned search advertising
deal as early as next week.

According to the online edition of the Wall Street Journal, citing
unnamed sources, reported that Google and Yahoo met with the
Justice Department Thursday, and have not been able to reach an
agreement to move forward on the deal.

Earlier this month Google and Yahoo agreed to put their search
advertising deal on hold while Justice Department regulators
reviewed the controversial partnership for antitrust violations.

Under the terms of the Google-Yahoo deal, Google would provide
some of the advertising displayed when the Yahoo search engine
is used. The two companies would share the revenue. The amount
of advertising outsourced would be at the discretion of Yahoo.

Google has gone to great lengths to defend and explain the
proposed deal with Yahoo. It has launched a page specifically
dedicated to the "Facts about the deal" along with a number of
other subcategories that argue in favor of such a deal.

Yahoo says the deal would generate between $250 to $800 million
a year in additional revenue. Yahoo says it would use the cash
to restructure and improve its search business in an effort to
capture more users and increase search advertising sales.

Critics of the deal have worried that the agreement would lead
to higher advertising prices and unfair competition. The
Association of National Retailers has voiced concern over the
deal.

Combined Google and Yahoo had around 83 percent of the U.S.
search market in August, according to comScore.

Google Indexing Scanned Text
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

Treating Text Imagery Like Text in Search Results

Google is now indexing scanned documents in search results. In
other words if you scan a page of text and post it to the web, it
will be treated like an actual page of text rather than the image
that it truly is (theoretically at least).

As Google says, while reading the scanned text may be very easy
for a human, it's a very error-prone process for a computer, so
it is unlikely that this will be a flawless endeavor. In a post
on the Official Google Blog, Product Manager Erin Levey elaborates
a little bit on what Google's doing:

====================================================================

In the past, scanned documents were rarely included in search
results as we couldn't be sure of their content. We had
occasional clues from references to the document-- so you might
get a search result with a title but no snippet highlighting
your query. Today, that changes. We are now able to perform OCR
on any scanned documents that we find stored in Adobe's PDF
format. This Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology
lets us convert a picture (of a thousand words) into a thousand
words -- words that can be searched and indexed, so that these
valuable documents are more easily found. This is a small but
important step forward in our mission of making all the world's
information accessible and useful.

While we've indexed documents saved as PDFs for some time now,
scanned documents are a lot more difficult for a computer to
read. Scanning is the reverse of printing. Printing turns
digital words into text on paper, while scanning makes a
digital picture of the physical paper (and text) so you can
store and view it on a computer. The scanned picture of the
text is not quite the same as the original digital words,
however -- it is a picture of the printed words. Often you can
see telltale signs: the ring of a coffee cup, ink smudges, or
even fold creases in the pages.

Google invites us to take a look at some results that incorporate
these listings (noticing the document excerpts):

- repairing aluminum wiring
- spin lock performance
- Mumps and Severe Neutropenia
- Steady success in a volatile world

This project ought to save some people a lot of typing. I can't
help but wonder if this will contribute to Google Book Search
pages coming up in regular search results in the future. Perhaps
this was a big motivator for Google to do this in the first place.
Just speculation.
