The Third Rock: Our Blue Planet

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:17 PM CST

(source: deestea)

Known interchangeably as the third rock from the sun, the world, the living planet, and simply, Earth, our planet is uniquely interesting in many ways that we often take for granted and don’t give a second thought to. Furthermore, while we’ve lived on the planet for over 200,000 years, we still haven’t unlocked all of its mysteries or learned to live in harmoney with all its different elements. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts and mysteries surrounding the Earth.

4.6 Billion Years in the Making

(source: nationalgeographic)

According to most scientific estimates, our planet was formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago, and while life appeared within a billion years, evidence shows that modern human beings appeared only 200,000 years ago (in what is now known as Africa). While we have found conditions (such as the availability of water) on Mars that make it possibly the next most hospitable planet to host human and other organic life, we’re still decades away from that possibility. So far, Earth is the only place in the universe where life is known by humans to exist.

A Place to Call Home

(source: gmu, wikipedia)

Though dominated by human beings (primarily because of our highly developed brains and erect body carriage), the planet is home to millions of species. In fact, life existed for over 3 billion years before the first known signs of modern human beings appeared. A combination of Earth’s biosphere, atmosphere, and magnetic field permits the existence of life on the planet. According to scientific estimates, the world is expected to be able to support life for another 1.5 billion years, after which the radiance of the Sun will eliminate the biosphere and all existence with it.

The Human Impact on Earth

(sources: focusman5, scampychamp)

Even as we depict the Earth as the mother-like, life-giving and sustaining deity, human beings are one of the most destructive elements to have ever existed on the planet. Pollution, deforestation, habitat destruction, exhaustion of natural resources, erosion of natural wonders, premature and unnatural extinction of species, and general devastation are all a part of the legacy we will leave behind.

The Earth Around the World

(source: nationalgeographic)

From towering trees to exploding geysers and limestone cliffs to beautiful icebergs, our planet has some of the most beautiful landscapes and seascapes. Unfortunately we spend more time as consumers, actively engaged in the destruction of this beauty than we do actually appreciating it.

Disabled man finds home in Allendale shelter

R.W. Langford, the Charleston man who was living outside a homeless shelter and sleeping in his wheelchair, said Friday he has a new home at a men's shelter in Allendale. "I'm up here in the hinterlands," he said. "I only have a vague idea where Allendale is." The nearest pay phone is three blocks away, so he spoke on a cell phone that a resident loaned him.

Some teachers support overhaul

Slightly more than half of Charleston County teachers who responded to a survey think the school district's proposed options for restructuring and closing schools will strengthen schools, benefit students and serve as the best way to save money next year, according to results from a Charleston Teacher Alliance questionnaire. Still, some hostility toward and uncertainty about the district's proposed options can be seen in teachers' responses.

Lender foreclosing on Watson Hill

The hammer has dropped on Watson Hill, the proposed development near a historic plantation that sparked a public outcry. Just as a four-year annexation battle over the 6,600-acre parcel near Middleton Place seemed to be ending, the lender called in the loan, another apparent casualty of a faltering economy.

Home offers too low, residents say

Harley Thompson pictured himself and his wife moving to a clean, safe neighborhood, far from the stench and ash of Charleston County's trash incinerator. He imagined himself and his neighbors in the tiny Howard Heights neighborhood of North Charleston, finally able to quit worrying about the proposed expansion of the Port of Charleston, which will pump a tremendous amount of pollution over the Neck Area.

Landlords win water bill battle

Mount Pleasant Waterworks has repealed a policy that drew a wave of criticism from apartment managers and shopping center owners. Commissioners have decided to continue allowing renters to open up accounts in their own names, Clay Duffie, the utility's general manager, said Friday.

Hard Rock Park's owners seek Chapter 7 bankruptcy

COLUMBIA â€" After a failed bid to find a buyer for the shuttered Hard Rock Park, the owners of the Myrtle Beach attraction on Friday asked a federal bankruptcy judge for permission to liquidate their assets so creditors can be paid. Attorneys for Hard Rock Myrtle Beach Holdings LLC have asked a Delaware bankruptcy judge to allow them to convert the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing to Chapter 7, which would allow the company to sell its assets through a trustee and use the funds to repay the park's creditors.

Markets open year with flourish

NEW YORK â€" Wall Street started 2009 with a big rally Friday as investors, brushing aside a disappointing report on manufacturing, sent the Dow Jones industrials up more than 250 points and to their first close above 9,000 in two months. All the major indexes shot up more than 6 percent for the week. The market lived up to the hopes of many analysts that it would have a fresh start in the new year after a horrific 2008.

Battleground Wal-Mart

LOCUST GROVE, Va. â€" Wal-Mart wants to build a Supercenter within a cannon shot of where Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant first fought, a proposal that has preservationists rallying to protect the key Civil War site. A who's-who of historians, including filmmaker Ken Burns and Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough, sent a letter last month to H. Lee Scott, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., urging the company to build somewhere farther from the Wilderness Battlefield.

Muslims removed from jet

WASHINGTON â€" AirTran Airways apologized Friday to nine Muslims kicked off a New Year's Day flight to Florida after other passengers reported hearing a suspicious remark about airplane security. One of the passengers said the confusion started at Reagan National Airport when he talked about the safest place to sit on an airplane.

Tigers 'left a lot of points on the field'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â€" It wasn't the storybook ending that Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and Tigers fans were hoping for against Nebraska in Thursday's Gator Bowl. Twenty-seven years earlier, the Tigers came to Florida, beat the Cornhuskers, 22-15, in the Orange Bowl and left the state of Florida with their first and only national championship.

USC blames loss on a lack of execution

TAMPA, Fla. â€" From Steve Spurrier down, South Carolina insists it was ready for Thursday's Outback Bowl. But losing 31-10 to Iowa â€" trailing 31-0 entering the fourth quarter â€" doesn't really back that up. "We came in and didn't look prepared, even though we were," said sophomore quarterback Chris Smelley, who had to relieve the in-over-his-head Stephen Garcia in the second half.

Stingrays fulfill victory promise

The South Carolina Stingrays guaranteed a victory Friday night against the Gwinnett Gladiators. South Carolina goalie Bobby Goepfert made sure the Stingrays were as good as their word. Goepfert stopped all 35 shots and Bryson Busniuk had the game-winning goal to lead South Carolina past Gwinnett, 2-0, before a crowd of 4,601 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Gamecocks knock off No. 19 Baylor

WACO, Texas â€" Devan Downey entered Friday's game against Baylor as South Carolina's leading scorer. After he shot 1-for-7 from the field and scored only four points in the first half, his coach wasn't worried. "I thought he was terrific in the first half," USC first-year basketball coach Darrin Horn said. "He ran our team, he got other guys shots, he defended. He did all the little things. In the second half, he did the same things."

Inside-outside merger sought

It sounded simple at first. Add 6-8 senior Demetrius Nelson and his variety of post moves to The Citadel's young 3-point shooters and there you have it â€" instant improvement. And while the 5-7 Bulldogs already have won as many Southern Conference games (one) and beaten more Division I teams (three) than they did all last season, the inside-outside formula has not been that easy to perfect.
