We Miss You, Kirsty

Posted: 18 Dec 2008 08:24 AM CST

Kirsty MacColl, Oct 10 1959, - Dec 18 2000.

The darkest day for Kirsty fans as her life was taken in totally avoidable circumstances at Cozumel in Mexico. News did not filter through to the UK news media until the 19th, and Christmas has not the same ever since for any of us. Please spare a thought, light a candle, raise a glass or sing “You scumbag, you faggot” at the top of your voice wherever you are, and in this little way you will ease the suffering of those she left behind all those years ago.
Free World (www.kirstymaccoll.com)

I suspect we’ll have Fairytale of New York in some of our christmas lists in the next few days, so how about Kirsty on a German TV stage, with a hastily arranged guitarist… Lemy. Who admittedly has to mime, but rightly falls to his knees in front of Ms MacColl.

A Song For Christmas, Every Day

Posted: 18 Dec 2008 08:08 AM CST

Rise and Shine writing a Christmas tune every day, to be featured on The Daily Dust

Sharp eyed Dust readers will have noted the addition of "Rise and Shine" on our sidebar. We’ve partnered up with one of the most innovative and entertaining teams on the internet. Using on-line tools such as Twitter, Seemsic and Mogulus, Rise and Shine will be composing, from scratch, a new Christmas Song every day until the 25th.

The tunes will be put together each night by both the Rise and Shine team and anyone who wants to contribute on the internet. The song will then be available each morning on their website, and here on The Daily Dust as well.

To start off, Ben Walker (the man behind that "The Twitter Song" you may have heard around the office) has worked, with the on-line community, to compose and perform "Magma Lady," a song about a lonely geologist called Derek ("I named him!" blogs Ian Shepherd) which you can hear in our player right now.

The show has a donation jar, so if you’re enjoying the tracks, do pop a some pounds in the tip jar to help good causes. During the first season in March, Rise and Shine raised £500 for Busk Aid. The Dust team have donated already, we hope you do too.

You can take part every night at 7pm by browsing to the Rise and Shine Mogulus page (www.mogulus.com/riseandshine). See you there, and if not, same time tomorrow for another new Christmas track?

Magma Lady, by Ben Walker, at Rise and Shine.

    Advantage, Democrats

The Democratic Party has soared to its widest advantage over the Republicans in trust to handle the nation's main problems in 26 years of ABC News/Washington Post polls, aided both by Barack Obama's strong ratings and George W. Bush's weak ones.

Fifty-six percent of Americans pick the Democrats to do a better job coping with the main challenges the nation faces over the next few years ? the most in polls since 1982 ? vs. 23 percent for the Republicans, their lowest on record by a substantial margin.
