High Con Art

With the news that accused scam artist investor Bernie Madoff put up a trio of homes to cover his $10 million bond at a federal courthouse in Manhattan, we take a look inside the mind of a con man -- to see how they operate and how their victims are duped. "Nightline" correspondent John Donvan reports.

Tiger Temple

Over nearly a decade, a temple in the heart of the Thai jungle has been building a tiger population that now far outnumbers the seven monks who live and pray there. And the temple has become a major tourist attraction, providing visitors a hands-on experience they can't find (and may not want to) in an American zoo. But these monks and their tame tigers have generated critics, who accuse the temple of everything from drugging the animals to illegally trafficking them. The monks stand by their temple, as Clarissa Ward reports.

Throwing Shoes It's a cultural message that's among the lowest forms of insult in Iraq, but that was lost in translation for many Americans, who instead -- for whatever reason and regardless of political persuasion -- found humor in the pair of Size 10s that an Iraqi journalist managed to hurl at President George W. Bush before being pulled down. Needless to say, pop culture swooned, as ABC News correspondent David Wright reports.

We hope you'll join us.

Will OPEC raise oil prices? What will that mean for U.S. drivers? That story tonight on The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

    (CBS) QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today -- but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all."
    - Isaac Asimov

    DID YOU KNOW?
The fungus called truffles can cost $800 to $1,500 per pound.

TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on from Anchor and Managing Editor of The CBS Evening News, Katie Couric

    Hi everyone,

We'll begin tonight's broadcast with new revelations surfacing about the alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme run by former financier Bernard Madoff. The list of alleged victims keeps growing, and now includes several Hollywood bigs. Meanwhile, in Washington, the SEC chairman Christopher Cox ordered an internal investigation into whether his agency missed signs of trouble with Madoff’s investments. And although Madoff avoided jail for now, remaining free on bail, he had to run the gauntlet of press when returning home to New York. Bob Orr has the full story.

Despite legal and legislative challenges to his office, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is still standing - and fighting. Today, our Cynthia Bowers asked President-elect Barack Obama about releasing records of any communications with Blagojevich - and we'll show you what he said tonight.

Next: OPEC announced its biggest production cut in history today. The cartel plans to subtract 2.2 million barrels a day from its output. OPEC hopes to drive the price of a barrel to roughly double what it is today. Oil producers in Russia and elsewhere said they would follow suit - but what will it mean for U.S. drivers? Elizabeth Palmer has the story.

Later this week Bush administration plans to auction off more than 100,000 acres of public land in Utah to allow oil-and-gas drilling. Conservation groups are suing the government, trying to block the sale of what they call a cultural treasure. Wyatt Andrews has the story and will show us an interview with Robert Redford, who calls the sale "morally criminal."

Finally, what do you get when you plunk 28,000 pipes down next to the women's department of a giant retail store? A huge holiday tradition that's music to Macy's ears. We sent Richard Schlesinger to Philadelphia to scope out the world's largest pipe organ.

    See you tonight! Katie

And here's an early look at one of the stories we are working on for Thursday’s broadcast: Back in September we introduced you to this brave young lady who was battling cancer. So, how is Pearce Quesenberry doing now? We decided to follow up...and she has some amazing news to report! That story and much more, Thursday night only on The CBS Evening News.

    Courtesy of CODEPINK:

In D.C. yesterday morning, the Iraq Ambassador to the United States, Samir Sumaida'ie, paused during a presentation to address a handful of women from CODEPINK who were holding signs in the audience reading "Free al-Zaidi" and "al-Zaidi speaks for me." The signs were to show support for the Iraqi journalist who was taken into police custody after throwing his shoes at President Bush during a Baghdad press conference on Sunday.

The Ambassador directly acknowledged the women's presence in the audience. He called al-Zaidi's act disgraceful and said the journalist was lucky that he didn't try something like this under Saddam Hussein.

The BBC is reporting today that the shoe thrower has allegedly been beaten while in custody. Muntadar's brother Dargham has reported that al-Zaidi suffered a broken arm, broken ribs, and internal bleeding. "The only thing that will hopefully keep al-Zaidi from being swept up into an anonymous prison for an indefinite period, and even tortured, is the huge outpouring of support he has received the world over," said Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK.

Visit AlterNet for more on the fate of Muntadar al-Zaidi, as well as the latest Rights & Liberties content.
