Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and, as any regular reader of this newsletter knows, the United States has a long way to go in living up to the ideals that inspired it. But the good news is that people all over the country and all over the world are finding new ways to fight for justice. One remarkable group named WITNESS, has managed to harness the power of video technology to advance the fight for human rights, from Burma to Afghanistan. Go here to watch a video they produced in honor of this day, which asks: "What image opened your eyes to human rights?"

Thanks for reading,

The Auto Bailout Ripple effect...what does it mean for you? That story tonight on The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

CBS) QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today -- but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all."
- Isaac Asimov

DID YOU KNOW?
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City hung Matisse's ‘Le Bateau’ upside-down for 47 days before an art student noticed the error.

TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on from Anchor and Managing Editor of The CBS Evening News, Katie Couric

Hi everyone,

President-elect Barack Obama called on Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to resign today, one day after the governor was arrested and accused of trying to sell Mr. Obama’s old Senate seat. And a growing chorus of politicians is calling for Blagojevich’s resignation or impeachment - and for a special election to fill the Obama seat. Dean Reynolds has the latest and Cynthia Bowers has a fascinating report on Chicago's notorious political past.

In Washington, Congressional Democrats and the White House have reportedly finalized a deal to keep struggling automakers afloat - to the tune of $15 billion. But will Republican opponents succeed in blocking the legislation? Bob Orr has the full story.

Meanwhile, is the American auto industry’s problem its own fault? Some believe consumers simply don’t like the cars being turned out by the Big Three. Anthony Mason examines what the automakers have to do to win back their customers.

Two months ago, Seth Doane profiled workers at a struggling restaurant in Elkhart, Indiana. Back then, they were told to start looking for new jobs, the owners unsure if they could keep their business running. Tonight, Seth returns to Elkhart, to check up on the workers, in the latest installment of our special series, The Other America.

Finally tonight: On Jan. 20th, the Obama Family will make history moving into the White House. Tonight, Jim Axelrod will report on a little-known, but remarkable twist to that story that you won’t want to miss.

See you tonight, Katie
