GM Downsizing Jet Fleet, CEO Still Flies High

Company Reducing Number of Jets, But Top Execs Keep Perk

General Motors said today that it is putting two of its five corporate jets out of service because the planes are not being used enough. The top three executives at GM, however, will continue to use the private luxurious jets for all of their business and personal travel, despite a flurry of criticism over the perk following an ABC News report this week.

60 Minutes E-mail Alert

It still seems almost a miracle that no terrorist or renegade country has gotten a hold of a nuclear device. In our lead story Sunday, you will see how frighteningly possible that scenario continues to be when Scott Pelley investigates the boldest attack ever on a nuclear facility containing bomb-grade uranium. In his first television interview, a worker at South Africa’s Pelindaba nuclear facility tells Pelley how he fought four armed men – taking a bullet in the process –  who broke into the plant’s emergency control center. The government of South Africa is not convinced that the attackers (there were actually two different groups of them) were after the highly enriched uranium, or HEU, stored at Pelindaba. That’s "nonsense," says Matthew Bunn, an atomic security expert at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government who has studied the case. “These people cut through a 10,000-volt security fence. They disabled sophisticated electronic intrusion detectors. These people knew what kind of site they were in.” Even a six-pack sized amount of HEU would be enough to make a small nuclear device of the type al Qaeda has been trying to obtain for years.

If marriage is meant to be “for better or worse,” the foreign-born widows Bob Simon speaks to in our second story are in the worse category times two. That’s because the Americans they married died in the middle of the immigration process, before the government determined whether their marriages were based on love and not a scheme to gain citizenship. The widows in this story now face deportation. Racquel Williams has a toddler and lives with her mother-in-law, Linda Williams, who tells Simon: "They filed the right papers…in a timely manner…and then my son died. This was not something that you can foresee."

Then Lesley Stahl welcomes back an old friend, Rex Lewis-Clack, the boy born blind and mentally impaired whose life was transformed when his parents discovered he was a musical savant. Now 13, Rex is still astounding his doctors who said at his birth that he would never walk or talk. He’s even reading Braille now. As his incredible skills at the piano continue to mature and develop, Rex’s music is allowing him to feel and express the human emotions his disability often robs him of.

CBS News Sunday Morning: Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

Friday, Nov. 21, 2008

As we enter into the holiday season, this week Sunday Morning  presents its annual Food Issue: Eat, Drink and Be Merry!  It’s a cornucopia of stories on all matters connected to what we eat and drink.

We hear a lot these days about globalization and the millions of new immigrants entering our nation. And it’s true, those influences are affecting the food we eat but, by how much? In our Sunday Morning cover story, correspondent Seth Doane looks at how the American palate has changed over the years and how it’s adapting to the changing economic climate.

One look at your 401(k) or your home equity and you may be tempted to try some real comfort food, in this case, some southern comfort. Bourbon, as correspondent Martha Teichner reports, is America’s home grown whiskey and 95  percent of it is produced in the state of Kentucky. Teichner tours one of the state’s biggest distillers, “Maker’s Mark.”

Thousands of years ago, before the age of farming, our ancestors got their food by hunting and foraging. How much has changed since then? Well not much, when it comes to putting mushrooms on the table.  Correspondent Serena Altschul goes on the hunt for the delicate fungi in the hills of California.

Picking the right mushrooms for a meal in a high end restaurant is usually a task reserved for the chef. And in the case of Tom Colicchio, that would be the “Top Chef.”  He is not only the star of a popular cable television program but also the owner of critically-acclaimed restaurants located throughout the country. Colicchio speaks with correspondent Tracy Smith about how his humble beginnings and his penchant for keeping meals simple were the sources of his culinary success.

The dishes at the Heart Attack Grill in Chandler, Ariz. are simple enough to do some real damage if you over indulge. That’s why they have a “doctor” and “nurses” on continuous call. Certainly a comfort to Bill Geist, who worked up the courage to take on the mighty Quadruple Bypass Burger, 8,000 calories of heart-stopping goodness. Obviously, the only thing healthy here are the portions.

Those stories and more on a special edition of Sunday Morning: Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

Listen for the trumpet.

Today on "World News with Charles Gibson":

The Economy:
It's been a week of massive declines on Wall Street. Citigroup's stock plunged 50 percent in the last two days to below $5 a share, raising concerns about the financial giant's future. What is the state of the nation's financial infrastructure, and is a bigger bailout needed to stem the bleeding? ABC's Betsy Stark has more on the economy tonight.

Person of the Week:
More than 30,000 wild horses roam free in 10 western states, but the Bureau of Land Management occasionally needs to thin the herds so the horses and other animals on the land have enough to eat. Some of those wild horses could have been euthanized, had Madeleine Pickens not stepped in. The animal lover, philanthropist and wife of billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens is creating a million-acre sanctuary for the wild horses, and she is our 'Person of the Week.'

And on our "World News webcast", along with our top headlines":

Punk/Rock Auction:
Bob Marley's guitar, Elvis's ring, John Lennon's organ -- those are just some of the pieces of music history that could be yours. Christie's auction house recognizes the value of pop culture, and is hosting a Punk/Rock auction with memorabilia from many of the most famous musicians from the past 40 years. But you better have some considerable cash -- even the low end pieces start in the thousands of dollars. ABC's Gigi Stone takes a look at what's on the auction block.
