Unpaid leave at Ed. Dept.

The state Department of Education is requiring all of its 900 workers to take five days of unpaid leave to deal with massive budget cuts. The decision, announced Wednesday by Superintendent of Education Jim Rex, does not affect teachers or district-level employees, but it does apply to mechanics in the agency's 45 bus maintenance shops across the state.

Visitor: Robbed twice in 3 days

Michael Buster can't believe his bad fortune. He said he's been abducted and robbed twice in three days, both times while in his friend's car. The most recent incident began Tuesday night, while he was sitting in a Toyota Camry at the men's dormitory parking lot at Charleston Southern University.

Man trying to flee assailants shot, killed

A man was shot and killed as he was trying to get away from two other men at an apartment complex off North Charleston's Greenridge Road early Wednesday, police said. The incident happened about 12:10 a.m. at the Cooper's Pointe apartments at the corner of Greenridge and St. Ives Road. Bank robber drops cash while fleeing

He entered the bank wearing a thick coat, latex gloves and a woman's wig of long, black hair. Bank employees would soon complement his outfit with a deep red stain, courtesy of an exploding dye pack.

Pinewood's Jennings signs with Clemson

Some of the Lowcountry's most high-profile athletes took advantage of the NCAA's early signing period, which began Wednesday. Pinewood Prep basketball player Milton Jennings signed to play for the Clemson Tigers, while his teammate K.J. Manigault signed with Wichita State.

Just a junior, The Citadel's standout receiver rewriting the record book

As Citadel quarterback Bart Blanchard approached the line of scrimmage late in the game last Saturday, he didn't like what he saw. Protecting a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, Wofford's defense was lined up with two deep safeties and a cornerback pressing up on wide receiver Andre Roberts, a classic "cover 2" look.

Caution flag falls on racing

Just as NASCAR evolved from its notorious backwoods past and earned respectability among the affluent crowd, something came loose in Turn 4.

Offensive line problems piling up for Tigers

CLEMSON â€" Cullen Harper, sacked six times Saturday in Clemson's 41-27 loss at Florida State, agreed that losing left tackle Chris Hairston to a concussion early in the game led to major matchup problems against the ACC's top defense.

Swamp thing: Gamecocks get ready for loud welcome

COLUMBIA â€" As Steve Spurrier correctly pointed out Tuesday, the road for South Carolina is about to get a lot more crowded. And louder. The three previous trips away from Williams-Brice this year have been to three of the four SEC stadiums that hold fewer than 70,000 people â€" Vanderbilt (39,773), Ole Miss (60,580) and Kentucky (67,606). (Mississippi State is the other.)

A&E told to pay Davis

Cable network A&E sought to portray local real estate investor Richard C. Davis as someone who came to believe wrongly that he and the network had an oral agreement to split the profits from the reality television show "Flip This House." But a federal jury didn't buy it, saying Davis' interpretation of the business relationship wasn't so far-fetched.

Why the Prop 8 Gay Marriage Ban Won

Why the Prop 8 Gay Marriage Ban Won
By Richard Kim, The Nation
The Christian right outmaneuvered gay rights activists when it came to reaching out to California's huge minority populations. Read more »

The past week has seen thousands of people rally against the bigoted measure called Prop. 8, which cruelly eliminated the right of gay Californians to marry their partners. After so much joy and celebration earlier this year, once again the LGBT community faced a legal slap in the face.

It was particularly sad because it came at the same time that the country's voters made history by voting for our first African American president. As Deb Price writes this week:

In his uplifting victory speech, President-elect Barack Obama told the story of 106-year-old Ann Nixon Cooper of Atlanta and the remarkable changes that have transpired during her lifetime.

Born just one generation after slavery, when people like her were barred from voting both because of the color of their skin and their gender, she saw America overcome the Depression, crush the Nazis, dismantle racial segregation, land on the moon and inspire freedom-seekers to knock down the Berlin Wall.

"And this year, in this election," Obama said, "she touched her finger to a screen and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes, we can."

For those of us who're gay, Ann Nixon Cooper's story is a well of hope to draw from as we continue our own difficult journey to equality after a bittersweet election.

Read the rest of her column here. And continue to check AlterNet's Rights & Liberties section for more on the unfolding legal battle against Prop 8.
