5 Animals You Didn’t Know Were Nocturnal

Posted: 16 Jan 2009 07:15 PM CST

(source: tone)

Sure everyone knows that bats, opossums, tarsiers, some rodents, and some types of monkeys are nocturnal. But have you ever wondered what other animals are creatures of the night? The following list might surprise you.

The Snow Leopard

(sources: ianmichaelthomas, arejay)

Living in the snowy mountains of central Asia, Snow Leopards are graceful cats now facing extinction due to habitat loss, lack of prey, and over-hunting. Easily camouflaged in snowy mountains, Snow Leopards are nocturnal carnivores that use the darkness to hunt sheep, hares, birds, and other animals.

The Red Fox

(sources: ericbegin, jimsalge, mikebaird)

Red Foxes live in various different types of habitats ranging from forests to deserts, and are smarter than they are usually given credit for. At risk from being hunted by man and wolves, these foxes usually hunt by themselves, at night, and eat small mammals, insects, reptiles, and various types of berries.

The Skunk

(sources: rescuechick, fuzzworks, kathleen)

Known for being one of the smelliest mammals, Skunks are mostly found in the Americas. These nocturnal animals produce a very smelly spray that they use to protect themselves from predators. As omnivores, skunks enjoy a varied diet including rodents, insects, reptiles, and all sorts of fruits and plants.

The Hamster

(sources: chmurka)

Hamsters are more specifically crepuscular and will burrow underground during the daylight hours to hide from predators. Hamsters mostly rely on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and berries but will sometimes eat small insects and worms in the wild. They are one of the few animals that have pouches that run on both sides of their heads in which they can stuff food for later consumption.

The Margay

(sources: sparky, walanbaker)

The Margay is a beautiful and graceful spotted cat named for Prince Maximilian of Wield-Neuwied, and is found predominantly in central and south America. The cat’s diet consists mostly of small mammals, birds, lizards, and tree frogs, though it sometimes eats grass and other plants. The Margay is at risk of extinction.

Man accused of assault, arson

Charleston police are looking for a 29-year-old man accused of assaulting the mother of his child Friday morning, then torching her Romney Street apartment. Investigators have obtained arrest warrants to charge Michael Demario Jackson of North Charleston with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, stalking, first-degree burglary and arson, police public information officer Charles Francis said.

Circuit City closing

Circuit City has pulled the plug on its hopes for a turnaround. The ailing retailer, the nation's second-largest seller of consumer electronics, said Friday it will begin liquidating all of its 567 U.S. stores, sending as many as 34,000 workers to unemployment lines by March.

Optimism fades about Maersk

With no agreement in place to keep Maersk Line from leaving, optimism is waning about efforts to retain the Port of Charleston's biggest customer. State Sen. Larry Grooms, R-Bonneau, said he expects by next week a final decision on whether the world's largest steamship line will depart South Carolina. "It's not over, but I'm not as hopeful as I was last week," Grooms said Friday.

Bank of America posts $2.39B loss in quarter

CHARLOTTE â€" Bank of America Corp. posted a fourth-quarter loss of $2.39 billion Friday as it suffered rising loan losses, soured investments and trading losses. Citing weak economic conditions, the bank's board slashed the quarterly dividend paid to stockholders to 1 cent a share.

Head of trade group optimistic for future

As acting executive director of the South Carolina World Trade Center, an organization that has seen a rough couple of years, Andres Grimes makes a familiar promise. "It's tough to be out seeking to grow a business now," he said. "We're going to do it." Last year, officials with the non-profit, which is designed to promote international trade for the state, heralded growth to come.

Business Briefs

Stocks rebound as bank losses mount NEW YORK â€" Wall Street managed its second straight comeback Friday, but the rebound was more a sign of the market's turmoil than strength. Stocks closed moderately higher after an erratic session that had investors tussling with concerns about the ongoing problems in the banking industry in response to more losses at Citigroup and Bank of America.

Got game in seventh grade?

OXON HILL, Md. â€" Giving in to the young-and-younger movement in college basketball recruiting, the NCAA has decreed that seventh-graders are now officially classified as prospects. The organization voted this week to change the definition of a prospect from ninth grade to seventh grade â€" for men's basketball only â€" to nip a trend in which some college coaches were working at private, elite camps and clinics for seventh- and eighth-graders. The NCAA couldn't regulate those camps because those youngsters fell below the current cutoff.

PowerBooker

You have to figure it will be close. The last four Clemson-Wake Forest basketball games have been decided by two points or less, or in overtime. No. 2 Wake Forest is 15-0 and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference coming into today's game at 10th-ranked Clemson, also undefeated at 16-0 and 2-0. So every bit of improvement Trevor Booker has made between his sophomore and junior seasons will come in handy today for the Tigers.

Urbanus on a roll for Bulldogs

All the kids know Stephen Curry, of course. And semi-serious hoop fans in these parts are aware of the Southern Conference's other top guards, players like College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock, The Citadel's Cameron Wells and Chattanooga's Stephen McDowell.
