Sanford signs loan request for unemployment funds

COLUMBIA â€" More than 70,000 out-of-work South Carolinians held hostage in a fight between the governor and the state unemployment agency were freed Wednesday when the state's chief executive agreed to an 11th-hour action that continues their benefit checks.

YouthBuild Charter School loses appeal

The state Administrative Law Court shot down Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter School's appeal of the Charleston County School Board's decision to close the school. It wasn't clear late Wednesday afternoon whether that meant the North Charleston charter school for at-risk students would have to close immediately or whether it could stay open as it pursues another appeal. More evident was the commitment of the charter school's leadership to keep the school open.

Left out in the cold

R.W. Langford said he slept outdoors in his wheelchair on Christmas Eve and Christmas night at Crisis Ministries. On New Year's Eve, he was still sitting in the courtyard at the homeless shelter, hoping to be allowed inside for the night. "I don't have a place to stay. I don't have any money," Langford said.

Moving in with mom, dad

The last day in her little apartment came Wednesday. She had been there two years, a single mom raising two toddlers near Spruill Avenue in North Charleston. Then the economy slipped, her cashier job at the Scotchman in Mount Pleasant was cut, and Shatanna Davis figured she'd scratched by as long as she could. She's moving back in with her parents on Johns Island.

Crime and the economy intersect

The local Crime Stoppers affiliate wants to clarify something for the public: they're a nonprofit, not a police agency. While some nonprofits feed the hungry or house the homeless, Crime Stoppers helps solve crimes. But like others nonprofits, the group is concerned about raising enough money at a time when needs are increasing.

Kelly morphed into one of Clemson's best

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â€" It's a call Clemson coach Dabo Swinney gets a thousand times a season. It's usually from a high school coach or a friend and sometimes even from a fan who has just seen the "next great Clemson player." Normally, Swinney is polite, asks a few questions, takes down the information, and files it in the "you've-got-to-be-kidding-me" cabinet.

The town of Tampa is ready for Garcia time

TAMPA, Fla. â€" Driving down Dale Mabry, a couple of miles south of Raymond James Stadium, the sign's message grabs you. Beneath the flashing green letters lighting up the Tahitian Inn, there's this: "It's Garcia time." As you might have heard by now, in so many respects, today's Outback Bowl is about Stephen Garcia. Take a step back. Think about how odd who's.

October losses were key for both Clemson, Nebraska

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. â€" Clemson and Nebraska arrive at today's Gator Bowl with similar histories and circumstances. Both schools have rich football tradition, national championships and zealous fans. But they have also known how easily it can all slip away with coaching changes and turmoil in the ranks.

Outback Bowl Head to Head

Heard enough about Stephen Garcia yet? The USC freshman's been the talk of his hometown. Can he back up all that chatter? Garcia's been playing with a spotlight on him for years. Why would this be any different? He'll play well. But he'll basically need an Outback MVP-type performance if the Gamecocks are going to win. Might be a bit too much to ask. At least at this point. You haven't heard much about Iowa's Ricky Stanzi, but he's been pretty steady since taking over early in the year.

Tampa's recruiting pipeline flowing well for Gamecocks

TAMPA, Fla. â€" South Carolina's Steve Spurrier has been asked several times this week how much the Outback Bowl stands to bolster the Gamecocks' recruiting efforts. The reality is they were doing pretty well in this town without the game. "I think we're doing OK here," Spurrier said, smiling, earlier in the week.

SEC urges new audit of Force Protection for 2006

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission believes Force Protection Inc. should have its 2006 financial statements audited again because of serious accounting oversights uncovered at the firm that examined its books for that year. The locally based armored-vehicle maker said Wednesday it plans to request a waiver from the commission's recommendation.

WTF?! Top 10 Extreme Green Stories of 2008

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 05:48 PM CST

Weird green tech and bad-ass hybrids. Shmeat…and the naked celebs promoting it. The coldest record on year and the Maldives’ panic attack. It’s been a wild year in green, and as environmental issues (i.e. the melting of the effing planet) hit the mainstream, we can expect even more ridonculosity from Sarah Palin and treehuggers alike. But let’s take a look at the most important green stories of 2008. And by important, we mean crazy.

The Future? Farked, Dude

(Image via radioactiveliberty)

One of the big stories of 2008 was the horrifying realization that we’re all pretty much screwed. The coalescence of bad news from all fronts (animals dying, temperatures rising, Bush helpfully doing his best to speed the process) created a global vibe of eco anxiety that ballooned like a disturbingly real and therefore distinctly unpleasant tumescence. The kind you discover way too close to your person at 4 a.m. after a night of heavy drinking at the local dive bar. The frat boy hard-on in the side of our collective existence: Very Bleak Future for Humanity. Thanks, United Nations.

What the World Needs Now Is More Naked Celebs

(Image via likewe’dlinktopetathefrigginattentionwhores)

If PETA can be depended upon for anything, it’s making animal rights appealing to the unconverted showcasing sexy celebrities. From Alicia Silverstone to Sophie Monk, it’s been a great year for gratuitous flesh in the name of a good cause. Funny, there’s only one thing this picture needs. More meat.

Palin: Polar Bears Are Needy Losers

(Images via nerepublican and Current)

Sarah Palin sued the Bush Administration for finally doing one nice thing for the environment by trying to better protect polar bears. Way to keep them on their toes, Caribou Barbie! In all fairness, any animal that makes a big fuss by drowning after its habitat melts is clearly in need of a chat with Dr. Phil. So clingy, those polar bears! But hey, she’s still hot.

Cold Sand? That’s Hot

(Image via squirmelia)

You know what the world needs more of? Aside from cowbell, plenty of refrigerated beaches. Fortunately, Versace stepped in recently to solve the worrisome plight of walking on warm sand by installing a refrigerator under its new hotel’s beach. No longer will the jet set suffer such toasty indignities! Besides, if you don’t have to wear flip flops at the shore, you’re avoiding plastic and that’s super eco-friendly.

Survival of the Drunkest

(Image via nhn)

There’s a lot of codswallop about cockroaches surviving nuclear winter, melting icebergs and whatever other delightful irreversible catastrophes humans come up with to decimate life as we know it. But let’s face it: environmental issues are seriously depressing, and the only cure for that is beer, which cockroaches do not drink. The world paused in awe this year when it learned that shrews can drink your roommate (you know which one) under the table. It’s obviously a defense mechanism, like skunk musk or rolling in scat, only more likely to get you laid. Shrews rage, pounding the equivalent of 9 glasses of hooch in a single sitting without burping a beat. Clearly, they will be the next species on top. Bookmark our words.

Speaking of Bugs

(Image via Waponi)

Scientists discovered a bug (well, a microbe, but who’s counting) that eats garbage and poops oil. Forget the Dark Knight, all we need is Superbug. Considering that the modern consumer’s world is made of disposable plastic and said consumers swill petrol like it’s the cure for cancer, this is literally the best thing since sliced bread. M. Night Shyamalan couldn’t make this up. Maybe 6 years ago he could have, but not now.

Homeland Security: #*)&#$%! Up the Rotation

(Image via rochestersolar)

Puff puff give! Puff puff give! Oh, hey. What’s up? Apparently wind power poses a threat to national security…in some place called the UK. Rotating turbines interfere with radar, making it really difficult for the government to fight the evil-doers. Fortunately, in the USA, we take a firm stance against wind power despite the efforts of the liberal media.

Shmeat: the Other Cloned Meat

(Image via misterbisson)

There’s a carrot being dangled for any scientist who can invent meat that isn’t meat. No, not mock meat that doesn’t even taste remotely like tasty murder making you wonder why they bother. Actual meat that still isn’t meat. Meet shmeat. Supposedly, a pile of cash goes to the inventor who can not only create a faux filet but get it past the FDA and onto grocery shelves. Any scientist who would fall for that contest is probably already busy working for the Discovery Institute, but fingers crossed!
