Rise and Shine as Paris Goes To Belgium

Posted: 20 Dec 2008 08:07 AM CST

What happens when the topical song-writers get a hold of a new Paris Hilton story?

You can hear what happens, as the composing talents of the internet combine on Rise and Shine for a Euro-pop / House / Frankie goes to Hollywood style jam, mashing the stories of Paris Hilton being burguled with the Belgian Government-Elect resigning on mass:

The scenario is that due to a mix up in communications, the French confuse reports of Paris Hilton's Hollywood burglary with their capital city being stolen by Belgians. King Albert decides rather than risk the wrath of his European neighbours to sell the entire land to a French bank.

You’ll find the song in our player on the right, and also online at Rise and Shine.

Don’t forget this Christmas season of the show is for charity, and any donations can be made through their website using PayPal.

British Turkey Truck Blown Up by Taliban

Posted: 20 Dec 2008 07:48 AM CST

Taliban insurgents have blown up a truck filled with 325kg of Christmas turkeys. The frozen birds were destined for up to 3,000 British troops in Afghanistan.

Despite all the birds being completely destroyed, Christmas dinner will still go ahead after replacement turkeys were flown out by the Ministry of Defence.

Regimental Catering Warrant Officer Nick Townley, who is in charge of organising Christmas dinner for British troops in Afghanistan, said: “Unfortunately one of our Christmas wagons got taken out so a lot of turkeys had to be flown in especially.”

Commander Paula Rowe, spokewoman for Task Force Helmand, said: “Christmas Day will be business as usual for most of us - operations will be ongoing and we will continue to build on the progress that has been made so far in providing better security for the Afghan people - but never underestimate the ingenuity of the men and women to at least have a little bit of festive cheer, wherever they are!

“The chefs work non-stop to provide the best they can for everyone and often create a lot from very little - their efforts often go unnoticed and unrecognised, but their contribution is essential to the morale and wellbeing of us all.

“However we spend the day, our thoughts will inevitably turn to our colleagues who have been killed or injured and their families and loved ones for whom this Christmas will be very different.”

Win big with Ascot aces

Posted: 19 Dec 2008 04:31 PM CST

A small profit was made on Wednesday courtesy of two winners but with Christmas only a week away, this Saturday offers one of the last chances to win a few quid to cover any extra presents under the tree and
Ascot provides an ideal big-field handicap to get involved with.
T
he valuable Ladbroke Hurdle being shown on BBC1 is still in it's embryonic stages as a trends guide with only seven renewals since 2001, but five-year-olds have took all bar two of them and two to catch the eye from that age-group this turn around are Prince Taime and Take The Breeze (2.45).
The former gets in at the bottom of the handicap with a juicy light weight and ran a nice reappearance at Newbury last month when making late ground into third after being given a fair amount to do from behind. Trainer Philip Hobbs' runner will strip fitter today with that run under his belt and is available at around 12/1 in the morning prices.

Take The Breeze hails from the mighty Paul Nicholls' yard which makes it somewhat surprising that the he is trading around the 14/1 mark after recording a career best at Sandown last month. This gelding has taken a while to get his act together but a wind operation looks to have done the trick since last term and more improvement could be on the cards.

The other thoroughbred worth supporting appears in the evening at Wolverhampton where Mister Thatcher (7.20) can follow up Wednesday's impressive victory at Lingfield.
T
his colt was making his British debut that day after several runs in Ireland and the manner in which he burst to the front before his jockey eased up makes him one to be with tonight.

Carol Singers Receive Early Christmas Present From Seven-Year Old Boy

Posted: 19 Dec 2008 10:29 AM CST

A group of carol singers are £120 better off today after a seven-year-old boy tipped them for singing ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’.

Andrew Davis gave the singers the money after he found it on the table in his house. The money was meant to pay for his childminder. Andrew's father is pleading with the carol singers to give the money back.

Mr Davis said: ‘Apparently there were three teenage lads at the door singing ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ at the door and he went to find some money.

‘I’d left the £120 on the kitchen table top pay for a child minder and he must have just picked it up and given it to them.

‘I’m hoping they realise £120 is a bit much for singing one song and come and give it back.
‘I know it’s the season of goodwill but no-one is that generous.’

Hope, the Three Legged Cat, Comes Home

Posted: 19 Dec 2008 04:00 AM CST

Friday’s Rise and Shine song from the festive improvisers and the tale of a three legged cat.

Every day, at 7pm, the Rise and Shine team gather, with their on-line fans, at www.mogulus.com/riseandshine to discuss the day’s news stories, decide on one that appeals to them, and write a topical song about it.

It didn’t take much time yesterday for everyone to decide on the story of Hope:

A Cincinnati area woman has again found Hope, her three-legged cat with that name whose disappearance led to an extensive search. Hope’s owner, Norma Meece, had hired a pet detective as part of a nearly seven-week search costing more than $500 dollars after the cat disappeared from Meece’s home in suburban Green Township.
AP News

The song is now on-line both on our Rise and Shine web player (see to the right of the main stories on our web page), and direct from the website.
