Kelly Brook is the New Face of Pepsi

Posted: 06 Dec 2008 07:45 AM CST

Kelly Brook has been chosen as the face of a new Pepsi MAX advertising campaign. She is promoting the new Pepsi Quick Response codes. The codes are a kind of bar code that mobile phones can scan and then receive extra pictures and videos to their phones.

Kelly Brook said – in what sounds suspiciously like a prepared statement from a PR company rather than actual quotes , ‘QR technology really is the future - it's a great way of getting games, comedy, images and virals from Pepsi Max on your mobile - any time anywhere.'

'I had great fun on the set of this shoot - it's a new look for me and quite a departure from my normal classic retro style.

‘I really loved some of these crazy futuristic outfits though - and wanted to take them home!'

Power Giants Profit from Plummeting Price of Oil

Posted: 06 Dec 2008 05:16 AM CST

Power companies are under increasing pressure to slash their energy bills. The price of gas, electricity and oil have been significantly reduced, but energy bills continue to rise sharply.

Oil prices closed at 45 dollars a barrel yesterday, more than 100 dollars less than it’s July peak.

Robert Hammond of Consumer Focus said: “With the continued drop in wholesale prices, we have called on suppliers to lower prices without delay or explain why they won’t.

“Where there is clear evidence of companies not passing through price reductions to consumers when they should, the regulator must take firm and swift action against the offending suppliers.”

Intelligent men produce better quality sperm

Posted: 06 Dec 2008 03:31 AM CST

British researchers at King’s College London have demonstrated that intelligent men produce better sperm. The research suggests that intelligence and sperm quality are linked so smarter people were more likely to reproduce.

Ms Rosalind Arden, lead author, said “As an initial proof-of-concept, we took two characteristics that seemed, on the surface, unlikely to be associated with each other– intelligence and sperm quality – and tested whether there was a statistical relationship between them.

“We found a small positive relationship: brighter men had better sperm.

“But we are not trying to say that under modern conditions intelligent men are going to have more children.

“We wanted to test the idea that intelligence is favoured by natural selection.”

The research shows the effects remain even after taking into account factors such as intelligent men being less likely to smoke and more likely to live healthly lifestyles.

Ms Arden said: “This does not mean that men who prefer Play-Doh to Plato always have poor sperm: the relationship we found was marginal.

“We look forward to seeing if the results can be replicated in other data sets, with other measures of intelligence and other measures of physical health that are also strongly related to evolutionary fitness”.

Arise Joe, King Of The Jungle

Posted: 06 Dec 2008 02:58 AM CST

Joe Swash was last night crowned the King of the jungle

As predicted yesterday, Joe Swash became the King of the jungle last night after George Takei was earlier voted out leaving a final two of Swashy and Martina Navratalova.

After being proclaimed King, Swash, 26, said “Wicked. I can't believe it. Martina, you are my queen though."

During his interview with Ant and Dec he said: “It's been amazing, it's been everything. There have been ups and downs and I've finished on a high. I'm coming out a maturer man, it's been worthwhile."

Speaking of Takei, his camp buddy: “I love him, I love him, I think I love the man,’ he said of the 71-year-old Star Trek star.

“If he was a bird I think I’d be all over him. I just felt I could kiss him. Not in a gay way.”

After finishing a credible second, Martina, 52, said: "You can't compete with EastEnders can you! You can't compete with Joe, he's such a gent."

And third place finalist George said: "I'm delirious with joy, it was an unforgettable experience".

Joe Swash is now one of the favourite’s to be Dr Who, after this performance, who’d bet against him?

Avoid Xmas shoppers and punt all day

Posted: 05 Dec 2008 05:32 PM CST

Fast forward 19 days and it would be a white Christmas 'up north' – 4/1 by
the way should anyone fancy it – but here's hoping the snow which currently
remains at Wetherby melts in time for racing on Saturday, as there are
three bets there to help put nuts on the Christmas table.

The opening race at the A1 track provides the first port of call so set the
alarm in time for Diamond Frontier (11.40).
This five-year-old hurdler put up a much improved display on his second
outing of the season at Hexham last month when sluicing through the mud to
dish out a 12 lengths beating to Numero Due. Today's company is nothing out
of the ordinary and a follow-up looks on the cards.

An hour-and-a-half later sees the chance for punters to weigh in again on
Andytown (1.15), who represents the Nicky Henderson-Barry Geraghty
combination that were responsible for Barbers Shop at Sandown on Friday.
This improving sort demolished his rivals in a competitive handicap hurdle at Cheltenham
last month – winning with his head in his chest – and though hiked up a
whopping 18lb for that victory, he is capable of defying the weight on his
favoured soft ground with form-figures of 2P211 when the mud is flying.

The re-routed Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle is next on the card at
Wetherby and is being shown live on Channel 4, where Punjabi (1.50) should
take all the beating.
It's that man Nicky Henderson again who trains this progressive hurdler who
signed off last season with a superb third in the Champion Hurdle at
Cheltenham.
Punjabi fits the profile of past winners of this event and is the one to
beat after reportedly showing up good in his homework.

The final two bets of the day can be found on the all-weather where Lapina
(1.55)
will be popular in the opener at Great Leighs.
This filly showed an improved display last time after leaving trainer Pat
Eddery, running on well into second at Wolverhampton over 1m4f. A winner
over 1m6f in June off a handicap mark of 61, she will enjoy this 1m5f trip
from a rating of 56 for Jamie Spencer.

The fifth and final bet of the day comes at Wolverhampton in the evening
where Sendreni (8.50) can gain compensation for a luckless second over
tonight's 7f trip at Kempton last time.
This gelding was blocked in his run before hitting the front that day – a
move that ultimately cost him – but he has the opportunity to race off the
same mark here with Chris Catlin again wanting to take the ride following
Kempton.

Download Now Available For The Christmas Number 1 Attempt

Posted: 05 Dec 2008 11:59 AM CST

The attempt by BBC’s The One Show to produce a number one single for Christmas is now available to download..

With proceeds going to Children In Need, there is no excuse, plus it isn’t to shabby either (we all bought a copy for 79p).  Today’s updates from Kenton (we’ll be updating everyday as promised):-

“Hello all,

Going to have to pop in for a quick update today… because it’s all going - in my best rhyming slang - radio rental. The song debuts on The One Show tonight in video form….

and… here’s the biggie… the song is now available RIGHT NOW on iTunes with further links to follow. Oh, and overseas Squeeze fans, Difford fans,  ist fans and fans of Kev and Tom’s work… I am keeping an eye out for a suitable overseas link!

But get downloading… make loads of money for Children in Need, and make some Christmassy songwriters very happy.

Dear Reader,

Just when each of us should be feeling ecstatic that a dark, 8-year period of corruption, greed and arrogance is about to end, we're also feeling uncertain and financially distressed because of the unprecedented global economic crash.

We're definitely feeling the split here at AlterNet. In many ways, 2008 was a banner year for us. We were a major player in crushing the right wing. We smashed every one of our visitor records, attracting a whopping 35 million readers. The economic crunch is going to hurt us too, unless you can help us out.

Crash cause unknown, jury says

On a blustery evening in Charleston Harbor, two friends perished in the crash of a World War II-era biplane that was ruled an accident more than a year ago. On Friday night, a coroner's inquest reached a different conclusion.

Local High school named among best in country

Charleston County residents aren't just bragging when they say their school district is home to one of the top high schools in the country. Academic Magnet High School catapulted to the No. 9 spot in a ranking of the country's best high schools by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine's rankings issue will be published Monday.

Woman raped after walk home

A young woman was raped by a stranger early Friday after walking home from a nightclub in downtown Charleston, authorities said. Tenants of a residence near Calhoun Street reported that at about 1:45 a.m. their 19-year-old neighbor was banging on their front door, told them about the assault, and they took her to Roper Hospital for treatment, a police report said.

Neighbors learn of meeting after the fact

Ronnie and Jessica Jenkins recently finished replacing vinyl siding that melted on their Pebble Road home the night of the Sofa Super Store blaze. Their property is so close to the site of last year's fatal fire that they watched the rescue of a store worker from their backyard and stood in ankle-deep water as firefighters trained hoses on the inferno.

Boys & Girls Club cuts programs

The Boys & Girls Club of the Trident Area will close its seven after-school programs late next week but plans to reopen at least some of them next year after working out a new financial plan. Beginning Friday, the club will furlough about eight full-time and 30 part-time employees at the sites, which serve about 600 children ages 6 to 18 in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

COLUMBIA â€" Darrin Horn's women's clinic is scheduled for this afternoon. You might find more fluid basketball displayed there than South Carolina's 72-48 victory Friday evening against Furman inside the sparsely occupied Colonial Life Arena. "This was a game that didn't seem to have a lot of flow to it," said Horn, USC's first-year coach. No, it didn't.

Money, fame — and guns

Many NFL players shudder when they think about what Plaxico Burress is going through â€" and what still awaits. Players across the league think about how difficult his life has become. They think about how much worse it could have been. And they think about how â€" in a culture where athletes and guns seem to go together far too often â€" it easily could have been them. "It's eye-opening, there's no doubt about it," Falcons linebacker Keith Brooking said.

Koenning rips Clemson for dismissal

CLEMSON â€" Vic Koenning said nice things about Clemson and new head coach Dabo Swinney in an official statement released a few hours after he was fired Tuesday but did not hold back in an interview with the Wichita Eagle. The former Kansas State linebacker pointed out he was statistically one of the most successful defensive coordinators Clemson has had and questioned how the school could get rid of "beautiful roses" while trimming "a few weeds."

Quinn's courage honored

North Carolina freshman defensive end Robert Quinn, a graduate of Fort Dorchester High School, has been awarded the Atlantic Coast Conference's Brian Piccolo Award. The Piccolo Award has been given annually since 1972 in memory of the late Brian Piccolo to the "most courageous" football player in the ACC. Piccolo was the ACC Athlete of the Year in 1965 and played for the Chicago Bears before his career was cut short when he was stricken with cancer. His courageous fight against that disease was an inspiration to the Bears and the entire football community.
