Help AlterNet continue to expose the facts on Palin! As the 2008 election comes down to the wire, AlterNet is operating at full throttle. We are covering it all, from the sleaze to the inspiration, from voter suppression to theshocking nomination of Sarah Palin. In fact, we've probably organized more information on this woman than anywhere else on the web. And in the past two months, over 3 million people have come to AlterNet to read about the pratfalls and far-right ideas of McCain's VP choice.

Now is the home stretch. But because of the global financial meltdown, our budget is quickly shrinking just as we need to be going all out. Will you help us finish the year with a bang?

We could really use your support.

Much Thanks,

Don Hazen, Executive Editor

Fire heavily damages home in Old Village

MOUNT PLEASANT â€" Fire heavily damaged a house in the Old Village early Friday and burned a man who lived there. Mount Pleasant firefighters were dispatched to 100 Haddrell St. shortly before 2 a.m. They arrived to find a fire that had jumped from a grill on the side of the three-story house to the house itself, Chief Leon Lantagne said.

Sidewalk project delayed while land purchases are negotiated

The final portion of a West Ashley sidewalk project has been delayed until Charleston purchases land from two business owners at Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Ashley Hall Road. While the project might now appear to be a sidewalk to nowhere, it eventually will form a semi-circle of mostly connected walkways.

But she has a distinct memory of a past U.S. representative, the late John McMillan, whose House district included the area. And as chair of the District of Columbia Committee, he kept her home town from getting self-government.
