Defoe - “I Want To Go Back To Spurs” - Look Who Wants Jenas

Posted: 30 Dec 2008 09:12 AM CST

Jermain Defoe has told Portsmouth manager Tony Adams that he wants to rejoin Tottenham in January, and Jenas has a new fan..

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has finally admitted that the club are willing to sell Defoe in January, but for considerably more than the £7 million paid to Tottenham last winter.

Storrie told the press: “We have had a tentative enquiry about Jermain and told the club concerned he was not for sale unless it was for a very, very big offer.”  Portsmouth have received verbal offers of between £12-16million from Aston Villa and Spurs for the England striker.  Defoe however wants to go back to Spurs and to the Manager that originally brought him to Portsmouth, new Spurs manager, Harry Redknapp.

Meanwhile, Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas has emerged as a £15million January target for Spanish champions Real Madrid led by a certain Juande Ramos.  Real trail rivals and leaders Barcelona by 12 points.

Jenas has admiration for Ramos,  speaking earlier this month, Jenas revealed: “When Juande was here he was having a lot of bad luck. I can’t say enough about him, how good he is.

“I spoke to him after he left about how disappointed I was to see him go, but at the same time you have to move on.”

How To Use Naked Flames in the Kitchen

Blowtorch, Kitchen Blowtorch, or a Hair Dryer? Kamikaze Cookery decide which is best.

Now you could go all arty when making a crème brule, like Nigella or Ramsey, but that’s for people with a bug expensive TV show on the BBC. If you’re doing a smaller show on the internet, you need another remit.

Step forward Edinburgh based Kamikaze Cookery, who promise to use science to cook things, rather than simple things like recipes. So when they turn their eye to desserts, there’s a certain focus on the tools and results.

Are kitchen blowtorches highly specialised kitchen tools, or useless substitutes for a real blowtorch? We pit a kitchen blowtorch against a plumber's blowtorch … against a hairdryer.

With thanks to Kamikaze Cookery, where you can find more episodes.

Andorra Do A Father Ted For Eurovision

My Lovely Andorran Horse disqualified from Eurovision.

Sometimes life imitates art to such a degree that we have to really bend our "Best of British News" remit to get it in, but this is too good to miss.

Andorran Broadcaster RTVA (like the BBC here in Blighty) is currently getting ready to broadcast their national final to select a song to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest. Unfortunately the song Estrelles D’Or by Marc Durandeau bears a haunting similarity to the song that he performed in the Spanish National Final for the 2008 contest. Which came second.

Now where have we heard that before?

It’s the plot of "Father Ted!" Specifically the episode My Lovely Horse, where Ted takes the lyrics of a song that came fifth in "A Song for Norway" and enters it into the Irish National Final, only to discover everyone has alread heard it and knows the song.

I wonder if we can expect Andrew Lloyd Webber to write something that sounds a bit like Starlight Express for the 2009 UK entry?

(Hat tip to Eurovision.tv).

And here’s Bono and The Edge (U2) Covering Father Ted’s version

Wanted, Minister of Culture to claim Twitter

Pre-packaged account waiting for Andy Burnham

After all the hullabaloo about regulating all the content on the internet at the weekend, Culture Secretary Andy Burnham has been on the radar of many a UK Tech writer, none more so than Mike Butcher at Tech Crunch.

So he's registered the Twiiter account of Andy Burnham, with a view to seeding the account by having it follow a solid representation of the UK Technology Scene.

As such, I will be using the account to follow some of the Web's leading commentators in the UK, so that when he does want it back, it will be pre-packaged with people who can direct mesage him a few salient thoughts about the Web, at least before he makes policy on the hoof.

Butcher is accepting suggestions on what to do with the account, and we'll be happy to pass on the thoughts of The Daily Dust readers. I wonder if the rest of the Twittering MP's will let Burnham know what's happening?

(Hat tip to Mike Butcher at Tech Crunch UK).

Fixing CSS Drop-Down Menus That Hide Behind Flash Objects

    Posted: 30 Dec 2008 12:00 AM PST

This guest post was written by V Scott Ellis of Blackbox Technologies, a business that helps companies to maximize their web presence.  If you have WordPress knowledge and are interested in writing a post for WordPress Hacks, please contact us.

One of the more common issues with embedding a flash object on your home page (or any page for that matter) is that if it is near the navigation and you have CSS drop-down menus, then you may find your drop-down menu getting lost behind the flash object. If you haven’t dealt with this before it can feel like a nightmare, but fortunately it’s a pretty easy fix.

The Problem: You have a CSS based drop-down menu in your navigation and a flash element near it the menus may get “hidden” behind the flash object.

The Solution: Set the z-index of the div holding the flash to 1 and the z-index of the div holding the nav to 2.

    In the flash element:

Look for the flash <object> tag and add the following code:

    <param name="wmode" value="transparent">

You’ll want to insert this code right below the <param name=”quality” value=”high”> tag and include the code wmode=”transparent” in the flash <embed> tag .

Alert Regarding the WP Marketer WordPress Plugin

    Posted: 29 Dec 2008 09:52 AM PST

I know a lot of you also check our WordPress Forums daily, but for those of you that don’t, I wanted to pass along the following alert from Nick Roy regarding the WP Marketer WordPress plugin.

For those unfamiliar with this WordPress plugin, it allows you to select keywords on your posts and pages and automatically convert them into in text ads and affiliate marketing links.

Unfortunately, it looks like there is a problem with this plugin.   According to Nick:

A word of caution about the WP Marketer plugin. The WP-Marketer plugin was is causing the /feed URL and PHP to core dump. The system was segmentation faulting (segfault) when performing a regex for display of a particular portion of the page. For example, when I would click on my feed url, it would say page could not be displayed. Also, it would create a bunch of core dump files on my server causing the diskspace to fill up rather quickly. I deactivated and activated each plugin separately until I found that it was the WP Marketer plugin.

I have removed 50+ core files from my website account that had been generated through accesses of the /feed.

Hopefully the author will catch this and get a fix in place here shortly!
