Investing your money...what's safe? That story tonight on The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

QUOTE OF THE DAY
”Those who trust us educate us.”
-George Eliot

DID YOU KNOW?
Olympus Mons on Mars is the largest volcano in our solar system.

TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric

Hi everyone. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

President-elect Barack Obama formally introduced his national security team this morning, led by Senator Hillary Clinton, his nominee for secretary of state. Mr. Obama said: "Hillary’s appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances." Chip Reid has the story and David Martin will look ahead to the national security challenges that could face this team.

Next, in the wake of the Mumbai massacre, Celia Hatton reports on the latest developments in the India terror attack. And I'll speak with a Virginia couple who were trapped for two days in their hotel room, as gunfire and explosions echoed outside.

Shoppers spent more on "Black Friday" than expected. But many experts believe that won’t translate into a strong holiday shopping season. The gloomy outlook drove the stock market down today. Michelle Miller goes to the mall to find out how stores - and shoppers - are really doing.

One of the stars of the last Super Bowl is in the spotlight tonight, but for the wrong reason. Plaxico Burress was charged with illegal weapons possession today, after shooting himself in the thigh on Friday night, and apparently trying to cover it up. Armen Keteyian investigates the Burress story, and the growing problem of guns and professional athletes.

Finally, with many peoples' investments and retirement accounts shrinking, lots of folks are turning to tangible investments, like gold or stamps … or alpacas. Kelly Wallace looks at how these cousins of the llama are one woman's "stable" investment.

See you tonight,

Katie

The Verdict for Bowoto v Chevron is Coming - Be the First to know!

Freedom From Oil
CONTRIBUTE TO
GLOBAL EXCHANGE

Dear Friends,

Jury deliberations began last Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco in the landmark case against Chevron that has been in court for the last five weeks. This case - Bowoto v Chevron - is an exceedingly important case for the corporate accountability movement in holding the third largest US corporation accountable for committing human rights abuses abroad. No matter what the outcome, it's a victory that this case made it to trial and was heard by a nine-member federal jury. It's hard to predict when the verdict will come down but we will be ready to mobilize when it does and we need you to join us if you can.

Step One: You can be among the first to know when the jury brings back this important verdict. Our friends at Justice In Nigeria Now will send a text message the moment we know the verdict is coming. To receive this text from us send the message: "follow chevwrong" to 40404 (take note, this is not a regular number but that's the way it works). You will be sent a confirmation message.

Step Two: If you are in the Bay Area we, along with our Nigerian allies, need you to be ready the day of the verdict, stop what you are doing and come out at 4:30pm to rally at the Chevron gas station at 9th and Howard in San Francisco. This is a big moment and we need you, your friends and co-workers to join us to demonstrate a powerful presence. We will tell Chevron and other corporations that this is a new era, and we aren't going to tolerate unregulated corporate abuses anywhere. No corporate impunity! It is a victory that our Nigerian friends were able to come to the U.S. and gain standing in federal court under the Alien Tort Statute which opens the door for future corporate accountability cases.

So, sign up to receive the text message and mobilize the day of the verdict. In the mean time:

  1. Remind your friends and family to Sign a letter to Chevron's CEO to let him know that you won't tolerate Chevron's human rights abuses in Nigeria or anywhere. Sign on at http://www.chevwrong.org/letter.

  2. Read the story in the SF Chronicle about the closing statements on Tuesday.

  3. Catch up on last weeks' court proceedings on Scott Gilmore's blog - Bowotovchevron.wordpress.com.
