Wife tells of fatal fight

HONEY HILL â€" Doris Montgomery said she shot and killed her husband Tuesday night as he attacked her 47-year-old disabled son. A day later, she reflected on the horrific fight in the front yard of their rural Berkeley County home and wondered if she had done the right thing. "If I had it to do over, I would have just jumped on him and he would have had to beat me," the 67-year-old homemaker said. "I loved him. I don't care what he had done. I loved him, and I know he loved me."

Deadly, grisly rabies still threat in Lowcountry

Earlier this month a red fox appeared from the shadows of a gated Dunes West neighborhood and reminded a community of an ancient disease that still lurks. Rabies can transform a typically wary wild animal into a creature hellbent on spreading disease. The virus ravages the nervous system and destroys the brain.

Holiday crime alert

Officers in North Charleston got a jump on the holiday season by fanning out to businesses with a wish list. No, the city's finest weren't asking for gifts to put under the Christmas tree. This was a modest list full of selfless demands aimed at keeping merchants safe. Police were asking stores to make sure surveillance cameras work; to use adequate lighting inside and outside; and to clear windows of advertisements and other clutter, to better see people approaching at night.

Jail inmate accused of second slaying

A man sitting in the county jail on a murder charge for more than a year has been accused of a second killing from 2007, Charleston police said.

Man, 24, dies after being shot

Summerville â€" A 24-year-old man who was shot outside his home Wednesday afternoon in the Gahagan community later died in an ambulance.

Florida fan fixture with Citadel connections has fitting departure

GAINESVILLE, Fla. â€" How fitting. It all started with The Citadel, and 60 years later it will end with The Citadel. For the record, the gentleman's real name is George Edmondson, an 86-year-old retired insurance executive from Tampa. And on most days of the year he can go about his life without much notice.

Expect C of C, CSU to turn up the tempo

The Charleston Southern men's basketball team favors an up-tempo style and so does the College of Charleston. What that means is a good time should be had by all when the two teams meet today at 7:30 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Healthy Jackson, scheming make a difference for Clemson's defense

CLEMSON â€" But what if Clemson defensive tackle Rashaad Jackson had been healthy all season? "It's a big difference," senior safety Michael Hamlin said. "Rashaad brings a lot of emotion and passion to the game. With an extra guy in the rotation up front, it means a whole lot to the other guys to have more rest."

High-pressure Tigers overpower Terriers

CLEMSON â€" When little-used Zavier Anderson, Jonah Baize and Jesse Yanutola get into the game for Clemson, you know you're in trouble. And Wofford was in trouble most of the night.

Former Trojan's talent shines through in Atlanta

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. â€" Roddy White was kicking himself after the game. Sure, it would have been a tough catch, but it shows just how far he's come that everyone expected him to make it.

Med center may need downsizing

The square footage of the planned 27-acre office park that will complement the new East Cooper Regional Medical Center is too big for the approved zoning, a town official said Wednesday. Three years ago, Town Council approved zoning that allows up to 220,000 square feet of medical and other professional office space in the affected area. As currently designed, the development would have 293,500 square feet of offices, according to planning documents.

East Cooper: Shake-up at the top

Just weeks into the job, the new chief executive officer of East Cooper Regional Medical Center has made sweeping changes among her top-management ranks, saying it's time to bring in new leadership as the Mount Pleasant hospital enters a new era. Three high-level executives, including chief medical officer John Langley and chief operating officer Bill Cone, recently left their jobs, the hospital said. The other was Tony Ojeda, who was director of business development.

Dow drops to lowest close since crisis began; Oct. consumer prices fall sharply

WASHINGTON â€" A growing fear of economic deflation helped take the air out of the stock market Wednesday, and another white-knuckle final hour on Wall Street pushed the Dow Jones industrials under 8,000 to their lowest close since the financial meltdown began.

After several years managing a steakhouse in Texas, Beaufort native Tom Hall is ready to open a restaurant of his own. The entrepreneur is rolling out Halls Chophouse, a 160-seat restaurant at 434 King St.
